Peer reviewedRauschenberger, John; And Others – Administrative Science Quarterly, 1980
In this study of 547 high school graduates, Alderfer's and Maslow's need hierarchy theories were expressed in Markov chain form and were subjected to empirical test. Both models were disconfirmed. Corroborative multiwave correlational analysis also failed to support the need hierarchy concept. (Author/IRT)

Peer reviewedO'Donnell, Angela M. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1994
Effects of the orientation of knowledge maps on learning were studied with 28 undergraduate students who were randomly assigned to study maps presented vertically or horizontally. Performance of high and low vocabulary subjects was evaluated. Low vocabulary subjects who used linear maps performed more poorly than any other group. (SLD)

Examines the hierarchy of academic self-concept in four studies. Tests the hypotheses that strong hierarchical relations exist in the academic self-concept structure at a domain-specific level, and that a hierarchy exists in an educational setting with a strong focus on the curriculum. Results reveal support for the multidimensionality of academic…

Attempts to estimate a recursive model of earnings distribution with education, occupation, and hierarchy, using individual data for Japanese males. Proves that hierarchical position is very significant in determining earnings level. Compares the influence of education and earnings distribution in Japan and France. Includes 3 tables and 20…

Peer reviewedDuschl, Richard – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
This paper criticizes the Yeany, Yap, and Padilla paper (1986). Questions the internal consistency about hierarchical relationships of integrated processes and cognitive reasoning concerning procedures used for the generation of subhierarchies, instrumentation used to assess the process skills, and rigor of lexicon. (YP)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Formal Operations, Instrumentation, Process Education
Peer reviewedMosenthal, Peter B. – Reading Teacher, 1989
Describes and examines the taxonomic linguistic system, a multi-level classification of language.
