Fitzgerald, James T.; And Others – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1994
Implications of case specificity in two computer-based clinical-simulation examination cases were examined by a classical measurement approach and by a Bayesian analysis of test characteristics. Results from 163 medical students indicate that such examinations cannot be used in high-stakes situations without additional research. (SLD)
Descriptors: Bayesian Statistics, Case Method (Teaching Technique), Clinical Diagnosis, Computer Assisted Testing
Houlihan, Paunpimon A.; And Others – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1992
Describes a study conducted at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry that compared the effectiveness and efficiency of adaptive instruction with nonadaptive instruction using interactive videodisc patient simulations. The Dental Diagnosis and Treatment (DDx&Tx) System is explained, and problem-solving skills and study time are discussed.…
Descriptors: Ability Grouping, Analysis of Covariance, Comparative Analysis, Computer Assisted Instruction

Kinderman, Jesusa Valdez – Physics Teacher, 1992
Describes a computer simulation of the Compton effect designed to lead students to discover (1) the relationship of the electron's final kinetic energy to its angle of scattering and (2) the relationship between the scattering angles of the outgoing electron and photon. (MDH)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Discovery Learning, Energy

Bertoline, Gary R.; Miller, Daniel C. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 1990
Developed is an examination to determine a student's visualization capabilities. This examination has two versions, both developed to measure visualization ability, time to visualize, and reaction time. This test indicates the learner's ability to visualize complex three-dimensional objects from six principal views. Included are the results from a…
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Design, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics

Rodriguez, Walter E. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 1990
Described is a course that offers students the opportunity to learn the graphics language of computers in conjunction with the traditional engineering design graphics concepts. The course objectives, course description, course administration, and advantages to using the dual approach are included. (KR)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Design, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics
Rumsey, Eric – Computers in Libraries, 1992
Describes a HyperCard-based simulation/tutorial for the Macintosh that is designed to teach users to search the Medline CD-ROM database on an IBM microcomputer. Results of a user survey are reported, and the potential of HyperCard for bibliographic instruction, including the use of the tutorial to develop transparencies, is discussed. (MES)
Descriptors: College Libraries, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Computer Software

Donoghue, John R.; Cliff, Norman – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1991
The validity of the assumptions under which the ordinal true score test theory was derived was examined using (1) simulation based on classical test theory; (2) a long empirical test with data from 321 sixth graders; and (3) an extensive simulation with 480 datasets based on the 3-parameter model. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Equations (Mathematics)

Ackerman, Terry A. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1992
The difference between item bias and item impact and the way they relate to item validity are discussed from a multidimensional item response theory perspective. The Mantel-Haenszel procedure and the Simultaneous Item Bias strategy are used in a Monte Carlo study to illustrate detection of item bias. (SLD)
Descriptors: Causal Models, Computer Simulation, Construct Validity, Equations (Mathematics)

Masilela, Calvin O. – Journal of Geography, 1994
Asserts that a common problem facing educators is finding suitable pedagogical tools that capture the realities of cities in developing countries. Presents a role-playing simulation exercise that supplements and complements the case study approach to this topic. (CFR)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Cultural Awareness, Developing Nations

Langley, G. R. – Journal of Biological Education, 1991
Summarizes the animal rights argument that objects to the use or killing of animals for educational purposes. Reviews and evaluates alternative approaches that include the nonanimal options of videotaped experiments, self-experimentation, and computer simulations. (MDH)
Descriptors: Biology, Computer Simulation, Computer Uses in Education, Educational Television

Como, Robert M.; O' Connor, John S. – OAH Magazine of History, 1998
Describes the experiences of one high school class as they attempted to sort out the conflicting representations of Christopher Columbus. The students examined several textbooks and other histories. They then conducted a mock trial to determine if Columbus should be considered a criminal, a hero, or both. (MJP)
Descriptors: Colonialism, Controversial Issues (Course Content), Cultural Pluralism, Debate

Cohn, Cheryl L. – College Teaching, 1999
Describes a classroom experiment in cooperative learning, in which economics students were grouped into learning teams and given a computer simulation package to learn the effects of fiscal/monetary policy on various economic variables. Results included thorough coverage of course material, greater student interest, better discussion, higher…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement Gains, College Instruction, Computer Assisted Instruction

Hmelo, Cindy; Day, Roger – Computers & Education, 1999
Describes a computer-based clinical simulation for medical education that incorporated problem-based learning and reports on a field-based study that implemented this approach with first-year medical students. Questions designed to bridge the gap between clinical skills and conceptual science knowledge provided a context for collaborative…
Descriptors: Clinical Teaching (Health Professions), Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Field Studies

Dale, Jack – Canadian Social Studies, 1998
Reviews the Global Telecommunications Helping Inquiry, Negotiation and Knowledge (T.H.I.N.K.) simulation project developed by Lloyd Christopherson. Interviews Christopherson about the development, goals, and use of Global T.H.I.N.K. Provides a World Wide Web address for finding the project and teachers' guidebooks for running the simulation. (DSK)
