The effect of field-dependence-independence (FDI) on subject-matter achievement and mastery of inquiry skills was explored using a partially balanced design. The purpose of this study is to examine curriculum tracking and its effects. Examined is the process of tracking students in secondary schools of the kibbutz movement in Israel where social class differences are minimal. As a comparison, groups of students from urban schools in Israel are investigated. (Author/KC)

Guttman Smallest Space Analysis was applied to 51 variables collected on 850 children in 48 Israeli schools, grades 4 through 9. Mapping sentences were derived for defining achievement orientation.
