Results of the study indicated that switching emphasis from public park areas to improved semiprivate areas would result in more effective use of open spaces and less expensive maintenance costs. The findings of this study indicate cigarette smoking causes more respiratory diseases than does air pollution. The 1970 nationwide health cost of respiratory diseases is estimated at $6.22 billion.
