Ratcliff, Roger – Psychological Review, 1988
The technique for examining the time course of information processing developed by D. E. Meyer et. al. (1988) is analyzed. Research is provided, which suggests that this new method gives important qualitative support to some stochastic models and quantitative support to the continuous diffusion model of information processing. (SLD)

PORIDGE: Postmodern Rhizomatics in Digitally Generated Environments--Do We Need a Metatheory for W3?

Wallmannsberger, Josef – Electronic Library, 1994
Discusses the World Wide Web (W3) and its relevance to a philosophy of science. Topics include PORIDGE, an electronically mediated encyclopedia of postmodern knowledge; hypertext mark-up language; W3 as a medium for information ecologies; the relationship between W3 and the user; social manufacture of knowledge; and W3 as a model. (29 references)…

Langham, Thomas – Journal of Documentation, 1995
Argues for precision (consistency) in citing, proposing an approach to citation analysis that ranks citation-signallers according to usefulness. Suggests that it is misguided to classify citation-signallers by the nature of the motivations inferred to underlie their use. (JKP)

McLelland, Dorothy – Scottish Educational Review, 1991
A supplement to Craigie's two-volume "Bibliography of Scottish Education" is being compiled in the library of Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow. Principles of compilation, methodology, and structure of the new bibliography are described. Availability of printed volume and computer disk versions is noted. (Author/SV)

Bookstein, Abraham; Klein, Shmuel T. – Information Processing and Management, 1992
Presents new methods for compressing bit matrices in large information retrieval systems which exploit possible correlations between rows of words and columns of documents. Three encoding methods are tested and compared--Shannon-Fano, arithmetic, and Huffman--and an appendix discusses binomial coefficients. (20 references) (LRW)

Rockley, Ann – Technical Communication: Journal of the Society for Technical Communication, 1993
Describes how an analysis of Ontario Hydro's conversion of 20,000 pages of paper manuals to online documentation established the scope of the project, provided a set of design criteria, and recommended the use of Standard Generalized Markup Language to create the new documentation and the purchase of the "Dinatext" program to produce it.…

Glushko, Robert J.; Kershner, Ken – Technical Communication: Journal of the Society for Technical Communication, 1993
Offers a case history of the development of the Silicon Graphics "IRIS InSight" system, a system for viewing on-line documentation using Standard Generalized Markup Language. Notes that SGML's explicit encoding of structure and separation of structure and presentation make possible structure-based search, alternative structural views of…

Davidson, W. J. – Technical Communication: Journal of the Society for Technical Communication, 1993
Explains that structured authoring systems designed for the creation of generically encoded reusable information have context-sensitive application of markup, markup suppression, queing and automated formatting, structural navigation, and self-validation features. Maintains that they are a real alternative to conventional publishing systems. (SR)

Santelmann, Lynn M.; Jusczyk, Peter W. – Cognition, 1998
Five experiments examined 15- and 18-month olds' sensitivity to morphosyntactic dependencies. Results indicated that 18-month olds, but not 15-month olds, were sensitive to basic relationship between "is" and "-ing" and that 18-month-olds could track relationships between functor morphemes. Findings were consistent with hypothesis that 18-month…

Lakshmanan, Laks V. S.; Sadri, Fereidoon – Information Systems, 1997
Considers a "hybrid" approach to the modeling of uncertainty in deductive databases. The model, deductive IST (DIST) is based on an extension of the "Information Source Tracking" (IST) model for relational databases. Proves that the complexity of testing containment of conjunctive DIST queries remains the same as in the…

Greenberg, Jane – Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2001
Explores what might be the optimal query expansion (QE) processing method with semantically coded thesauri. Examines whether QE via semantically coded thesauri terminology is more effective in the "automatic" or "interactive" processing environment. Results revealed that synonyms and partial synonyms and narrower terms are…

Grefenstette, Gregory – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1998
Discusses the problems and current research techniques being explored in the area of Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) for finding documents in languages other than the original query. Discusses language identification methods, techniques for automatically generating queries in other languages, and retrieving and merging query results.…

Ruiz, Miguel E.; Srinivasan, Padmini – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1998
Investigates an automatic method for Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) that utilizes the multilingual Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Metathesaurus to translate Spanish natural-language queries into English. Results indicate that for Spanish, the UMLS Metathesaurus-based CLIR method is at least equivalent to if not better than…

Mayfield, Wayne A.; Kardash, CarolAnne M.; Kivlighan, Dennis M., Jr. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1999
Uses concept mapping tasks and association tasks to examine knowledge structures about clients. Four experienced and five novice counselors read a counseling transcript, categorized client statements, and mapped the relationships among categories. Results support the information-processing perspective with novice counselors attending to surface…

Cheng, Kwok-Shing; Young, Gilbert H.; Wong, Kam-Fai – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1999
Experimental results show that a word-based arithmetic-coding scheme, a fractional-bit compression algorithm which is known to be time consuming, can achieve a higher compression performance for Chinese text. This article examines how to cascade the word-segmentation model with a faster alternative, the integral-bit compression algorithm.…
