Penningroth, Suzanna L.; Rosenberg, Sheldon – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1995
Examined how information-processing load affects the writing process by having 40 undergraduates write a short essay up to a supplied ending sentence with increasing content constraints. Results found that a high information-processing load led to lower-rated story coherence, but not to lower- rated quality. (36 references) (MDM)

Farquhar, John D.; Surry, Daniel W. – Performance and Instruction, 1995
Presents a model of information processing that demonstrates how to facilitate knowledge acquisition. Various instructional strategies designed to reduce the effect of impositions are described, such as use of novelty, mystery, and questioning techniques; reducing complexity of instructional messages; and the automaticity of secondary skills. (JKP)

Horn, Robert E. – Educational and Training Technology International, 1992
Describes Information Mapping, a methodology for the analysis, organization, sequencing, and presentation of information and explains three major parts of the method: (1) content analysis, (2) project life-cycle synthesis and integration of the content analysis, and (3) sequencing and formatting. Major criticisms of the methodology are addressed.…

Bookstein, Abraham; And Others – Information Processing and Management, 1992
Discusses the problems of compressing a large textual database for storage on CD-ROM. A text-compression algorithm is presented, new algorithms for compression of indices are described, and the ARTFL (American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language) database is used as an example. (14 references) (LRW)

Simonton, Dean Keith – Developmental Psychology, 1991
Examined the location of the first, best, and last contributions of creative careers. Hypotheses specified the ways in which these landmarks should vary according to individual differences and interdisciplinary contrasts. Hypotheses were confirmed for scientists and inventors. Results lead to further theoretical constraints, new predictions, and…

Adi, Tom; Ewell, O. K. – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1991
Discusses language comprehension and describes a technology for computer-aided text analysis called READWARE and software from the READWARE family called the Research Assistant that measures the relatedness of words or phrases by examining their letters. The theory of Letter Semantics is explained, and paradigms for text processing in information…

Ensign, Chet – Technical Communication: Journal of the Society for Technical Communication, 1993
Describes how the change to Standard Generalized Markup Language at Information Builders began with the use of SGML-like markup in text because it solved a specific problem. Notes that many additional unexpected benefits led to an investigation of converting to formal SGML-based electronic publishing. (SR)

Grosser, Kerry – Annual Review of Information Science and Technology, 1991
Reviews multidisciplinary literature relating to human networks and information processing in organizations to determine how information professionals can better adapt their services to information handling in such settings. Interrelationships of formal and informal networks and information sources are examined, and the human element in…

Perkins, Kyle; And Others – International Journal of Applied Linguistics, 1991
Discusses a concurrent validity study of an indirect measure of English-as-a-Second-Language writing based on information processing: anagram solving, word reordering, paragraph assembly tests, etc. The criterion measure was a direct, holistic measure of writing. Analysis revealed that the indirect measure did not exhibit concurrent validity for…

Ramesh, Venkatar; Ram, Sudha – Information Systems, 1997
Presents a seven-step methodology for utilizing integrity constraint knowledge from heterogeneous databases. Describes generating a set of integrity constraints applicable at the integrated level from constraints specified on local databases. Introduces the concept of constraint-based relationships between objects in heterogeneous databases;…

Cory, Kenneth A. – Computers and the Humanities, 1997
Contends that large databases contain hidden knowledge, or literature that is logically linked but not bibliographically linked, that contains academically interesting commonalities not retrievable by normal searching methods. Based on search methods for discovering previously unknown causes of medical syndromes, a method for discovering new…

Pfeffer, K.; Barnecutt, P. – Child Care, Health and Development, 1996
Examined children's auditory perception of traffic sounds, focusing on identification of vehicle movement. Subjects were 60 children of 5, 8, and 11 years. Results indicated that the auditory perception of movement was a problem area for children, especially five-year olds. Discussed the role of attention-demanding characteristics of some traffic…

Kantor, Paul B.; Ng, Kwong Bor – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1998
Categorizes different theoretical justifications of data fusion into two approaches, examines their implications, analyzes some unsuccessful data fusion experiments, and proposes two conditions for effective data fusion. Results indicate that the efficacy and inter-scheme dissimilarity are good predictors for effectiveness of data fusion.…

Egghe, L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1999
Zipf's law states that if words in a text are arranged in decreasing order of occurrence, then the product of the rank of a word and the number of times it occurs is a constant of that text. Examination of the probabilities of occurrence of multi-word phrases in information retrieval in relation to the probabilities of occurrence of single words…
