Humphrey, Dennis L.; Falls, Harold B. – Research Quarterly, 1975
This study investigated whether the commonly used 180 heart rate termination criterion during progressive treadmill testing is valid for estimating absolute aerobic power in young healthy females. (RC)

Pate, Russell R.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1985
Eight male and eight female runners were matched on the basis of performance in a 24.2 kilometer road race, and subjected to various performance and body measurements. The results indicated that the male and female runners were very similar in body composition and in metabolic and cardiorespiratory responses to exercise. (Author/MT)

Armstrong, Lawrence E.; Costill, David L. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1985
This investigation examined day-to-day variations in metabolic measurements during submaximal running and cycling. Significant differences were found in the oxygen uptake (VO2) of runners and cyclists and the minute ventilation (VE) of cyclists while running, but blood lactic acid (HLA) did not differ day to day. (Author/MT)

Battinelli, Thomas – Physical Educator, 1983
The roles of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and fiber in producing energy for health and exercise are discussed. Long-distance runners should have a high intake of complex carbohydrates and fiber. (PP)

Physiologist, 1976
Presented are eight abstracts of a symposium held in conjunction with the American Physiological Society (APS) and the American Society of Zoologists (ASZ). Fish gill structure and function, renal function, acid-base balance and ionic sensitivity are topics discussed. (EB)

Felice, Patrick R.; Thomas, John A. – Journal of School Health, 1979
The controversy over the safety of saccharin is not resolved, but the discovery of other sugar substitutes may make the problem moot. (JD)

Ortiz, Jame; Raine, Adrian – Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2004
Objective: To assess whether antisocial children are characterized by low heart rate. Method: A meta-analysis was conducted on 45 independent effect sizes of the resting heart rate-antisocial behavior relationship obtained from 40 studies meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies were conducted between 1971 to 2002 using a total of 5,868…

Monk, Catherine; Sloan, Richard P.; Myers, Michael M.; Ellman, Lauren; Werner, Elizabeth; Jeon, Jiyeon; Tager, Felice; Fifer, William P. – Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2004
Objective: To determine whether there are differences in fetal heart rate (FHR) reactivity associated with women's psychiatric status. Method: In 57 women in their 36th to 38th week of pregnancy (mean age 27 [+ or -] 6 years), electrocardiogram, blood pressure (BP), respiration (RSP), and FHR were measured during baseline and a psychological…

Silverstein, Todd – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2005
For many years, mitochondrial phosphate-to-oxygen ratios were believed to be integral values: 3 for ATP/NADH and 2 for ATP/FADH[subscript 2]. The chemiosmotic theory has demonstrated that this need not be the case because coupling sites do not directly synthesize ATP. Coupling between coupling site redox reactions and ATP synthesis occurs via…

Anderson, Gretchen L.; Page, Shallee T. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Classroom demonstrations and activities are used to illustrate the properties of enantiomer. During this activity, in a relatively short time students develop a working knowledge of the importance of stereochemistry in biochemistry and its effect on drug design and metabolism.

Behrman, Edward J.; Marzluf, George A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
An argument is made in favor of imperfect or unfinished evolution based on some metabolic pathways in which it seems that intelligent design would have done better. The case studies noted indicate the absence of highly intelligent design and are not intended as comprehensive collection but as a limited sample of inefficient situations in…
