Peer reviewedGraham, Steven W. – Continuing Higher Education Review, 1989
To examine the outcomes from traditional undergraduate degree programs, 7,577 recent college graduates over 30 were surveyed. Factor analysis structured 24 outcome variables into 5 categories in which adults felt their education had a major impact: self-directed learning, human/artistic development, communication skills, logic/problem solving, and…
Descriptors: Adult Education, Adult Students, Factor Analysis, Higher Education
Peer reviewedNeal, Arthur G.; And Others – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1989
Examined attitudes of ambivalence and hostility toward children by drawing on a random sample of 600 couples in the early years of marriage. Based on a scale that measured perceived advantages and disadvantages of children, results showed that several alienation variables were associated with negative attitudes toward children, while several…

Peer reviewedCrohan, Susan E.; Veroff, Joseph – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1989
Four dimensions of marital well-being--happiness, equity, competence, and control--emerged in a factor analysis of 12 items asking 199 Black and 174 White newlywed couples to evaluate their overall marital quality. Dimensions were related to respondents' gender, cohabitation history, education, and income, differentially for Blacks and Whites. (TE)
Descriptors: Blacks, Cohabitation, Comparative Analysis, Competence
Peer reviewedSamar, Vincent J.; And Others – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1989
The relationships between speech parameters and speech intelligibility of 40 severely to profoundly hearing-impaired adults were studied. Regression analysis revealed that speech intelligibility was predicted by a cognate-pair voice-onset-time difference measure and a measure of the stability of the volume-velocity rise time. (Author/JDD)
Descriptors: Adults, Articulation (Speech), Deafness, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedMainous, Arch G., III – Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, 1989
Uses data from 991 Mexican-Americans in six states to develop a nine-item acculturation measure based on respondent's language and self-definition as insider or outsider. Describes factor structure and construct validity. Contains 28 references. (SV)
Descriptors: Acculturation, Construct Validity, Factor Analysis, Identification (Psychology)
Peer reviewedHumphreys, Lloyd G.; Eysenck, Hans J. – Intelligence, 1989
Three papers--comments, a reply to comments, and a rejoinder--discussing a conclusion about the nature of general intelligence based on the size loadings of a psychomotor test of discrimination reaction time are presented. The use of Spearman's "g" is the center of the controversy. (TJH)
Descriptors: Discrimination Learning, Estimation (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Intelligence
Peer reviewedHart, Ann Weaver – American Educational Research Journal, 1987
A career ladder affecting the work structure and career opportunities of teachers was studied to determine effects on teacher attitudes. Responses of 389 elementary through high school teachers to career ladder work efforts, work of schools, peer supervision, and career growth opportunities and stability were affected by the design. (TJH)
Descriptors: Career Development, Career Ladders, Elementary Secondary Education, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedLiou, Michelle – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1988
In applying I. I. Bejar's method for detecting the dimensionality of achievement tests, researchers should be cautious in interpreting the slope of the principal axis. Other information from the data is needed in conjunction with Bejar's method of addressing item dimensionality. (SLD)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Computer Simulation, Difficulty Level, Equated Scores
Peer reviewedBaker, Frank B. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1988
The form of item log-likelihood surface was investigated under two-parameter and three-parameter logistic models. Results confirm that the LOGIST program procedures used to locate the maximum of the likelihood functions are consistent with the form of the item log-likelihood surface. (SLD)
Descriptors: Estimation (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Graphs, Latent Trait Theory
Peer reviewedNoller, Patricia; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1988
The Comrey Personality Scales were administered to 669 Australian advanced undergraduate students at the University of Queensland in 1984 and 1985. Factor analysis of results and results with other cultural groups indicate that the eight personality factors measured by the scales have considerable stability across cultural boundaries. (TJH)
Descriptors: Cross Cultural Studies, Factor Analysis, Foreign Countries, Higher Education
Peer reviewedDeSarbo, Wayne S.; Cho, Jaewun – Psychometrika, 1989
This paper presents a new stochastic multidimensional scaling vector threshold model designed to analyze "pick any/n" choice data. A maximum likelihood procedure is formulated to estimate a joint space of both individuals and stimuli. The non-linear probit type model is described, and a Monte Carlo analysis is performed. (TJH)
Descriptors: Consumer Economics, Equations (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Maximum Likelihood Statistics
Peer reviewedJensen, Arthur R.; Weng, Li-Jen – Intelligence, 1994
The stability of psychometric "g," the general factor of intelligence, is investigated in simulated correlation matrices and in typical empirical data from a large battery of mental tests. "G" is robust and almost invariant across methods of analysis. A reasonable strategy for estimating "g" is suggested. (SLD)

Reading Aloud to Children: Characteristics and Relationships between Teachers and Student Behaviors.
Peer reviewedMorrow, Lesley Mandel; And Others – Reading Research and Instruction, 1995
Determines teacher and child behaviors during story reading and how they are related. Gathers data from 146 urban and suburban elementary school classrooms. Uses factor analysis to identify five categories of teacher behaviors and five categories of student behaviors. Finds that, across grade levels, children's involvement in prediscussion was…
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Factor Analysis, Reading Aloud to Others, Reading Research
Peer reviewedNorris, Stephen P. – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1995
Examines effects of 5 test-format differences on performance of 15 critical-thinking measures. Scores of 172 Canadian high school students on all measures generated a correlation matrix that was best accounted for by a 5-factor model postulating critical-thinking, context, and credibility judgment factors. Multiple-choice and constructed-response…

Peer reviewedSherman, Thomas M.; And Others – Journal of Research in Education, 1992
Investigates perceptions of over 700 college faculty members about the formation and execution of academic policies covering student athletes. Faculty are indifferent to athletes in general, and they believe they do not have an influence on academic policies for athletes regardless of institutional policies. (SLD)
