Maloney, David P. – Science Education, 1983
Examined relation between college students' (N=108) ability to solve simple ratio tasks (for example, their proportional reasoning patterns) and their rule-governed behavior with the balance beam. Also identified modifications in a set of rules for the balance beam tasks. Results and implications for science instruction are discussed. (JN)

Hobson, Art – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1983
Suggests that science-related material on nuclear war be included in introductory courses. Lists nuclear war topics for physics, psychology, sociology, biology/ecology, chemistry, geography, geology/meteorology, mathematics, and medical science. Also lists 11 lectures on nuclear physics which include nuclear war topics. (JN)

Rechnitz, Garry A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Discusses topics on membrane electrodes corresponding to approximately six hours of lecture time. These include glass, liquid, crystal, gas-sensing membrane electrodes as well as enzyme and other bioselective membrane electrodes. Instructional strategies and other topics which might be discussed are provided. (JN)

Evans, Dennis H.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Cyclic voltammetry is a simple experiment that has become popular in chemical research because it can provide useful information about redox reactions in a form which is easily obtained and interpreted. Discusses principles of the method and illustrates its use in the study of four electrode reactions. (Author/JN)

Schenk, James O.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Using ascorbic acid enzyme assays in conjunction with chronoamperometric measurements, reliable values for the principal electroactive components in the rat caudate extracellular fluid were established. Techniques used in the study are discussed. (JN)

Hutchinson, Colin S. – Journal of Biological Education, 1983
The use of the word "fact" in science is discussed. It is suggested that the everyday meaning of the term is assumed when it is used in science and that this can create problems. Some possible ways of overcoming these difficulties are indicated. (Author)

Balaban, David J.; And Others – Analytical Chemistry, 1983
Describes an interactive computer program designed to provide graphical representations of chemistry and engineering experimental data sets and results of data analyses. Extremely flexible, the program requires no reprograming when new models are used. Models are entered into the program as input lines. (JN)

Moore, Carl E.; Curtis, Veronica A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Describes Loyola University chemistry faculty training program. Areas addressed during the program include admissions (tests and test interpretation, financial aids, student selection), academic/psychological/moral student counseling, professional relations, curriculum/instruction (planning, strategies, teaching aids, grading), and professional…

Whisnant, David M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Learning cycles (exploration, invention, application) are used to introduce general chemistry principles while giving students concrete experiences with descriptive chemistry. Principles taught in the laboratory, laboratory experiments, instructional strategies, and evaluation of the approach are discussed. (Author/JN)

Zipko, Stephen J. – American Biology Teacher, 1982
Examines the basking postures of captive eastern painted turtles exposed to two different sources of illumination (white floor lamps and infrared heat lamps) and three types of substrates (sphagnum, rock, wood) and discusses possible ecological and evolutionary significance of these behaviors. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Animal Behavior, Animals, Biology, College Science
Walker, Jearl – Scientific American, 1982
Spatial filtering, based on diffraction/interference of light waves, is a technique by which unwanted information in a picture ("noise") can be separated from wanted information. A series of experiments is described in which students can create a system that functions as an optical computer to create clearer pictures. (Author/JN)

Miller, James C.; And Others – Science, 1982
A linear photodiode array is used as the photodetector element in a new ultraviolet-visible detection system for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Using a computer network, the system processes eight different chromatographic signals simultaneously in real-time and acquires spectra manually/automatically. Applications in fast HPLC…

Howell, Dennis G.; Soltys, Marian A. – Impact of Science on Society, 1982
A review of great epidemics (rat-borne, plague, smallpox, cholera, influenza, rabies, tuberculosis) reveals the devastation they have caused. Success in the battle against these is being won through hygiene, sanitation, vector control, and vaccines, especially since microbiology has provided a rational understanding of the diseases.
