Tabbron, G. – Vocational Aspect of Education, 1981
Studies the personality traits of carefully defined groups of students in further education colleges and correlates these traits with academic success on unaggregated measures of attainment and with aspects of convergent and divergent thinking. (CT)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, College Science, Convergent Thinking, Data Analysis

Ferguson, Lloyd N. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Presented are three ways in which bioactivity of organic compounds has been introduced in organic chemistry courses. One is to point out a typical bioactivity of a given functional group. A second is to discuss biorganic mechanisms. A third is to draw structure-activity correlations (SAR). (Author/HM)

Alyea, Hubert N. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Discusses how TOPS devices can be improved. New chemistry-physics devices are offered in hopes of encouraging teachers to invent other small devices for projection on a TOPS projector-adaptor. (HM)

Walker, Noojin – Science Education, 1980
Described are results from a study of college general biology textbooks determining significant increases or decreases in human-interest level and/or grade-level readability. In an analysis of eight textbooks used in 56 colleges, it was concluded that neither readability nor interest level has changed from 1960 to 1978. (CS)

Case, Christine L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Determined was the effect of autotutorial instruction in the laboratory portion of a general biology course designed for nonbiology majors. Results indicate positive effects in enrollment, increased retention, and improved student achievement. (CS)

Freier, George – Physics Teacher, 1981
Discusses the role, importance, and benefits of performing demonstrations in physics. Suggests that actual demonstrations are more valuable than those presented on films or videotapes. (SK)
Descriptors: College Science, Demonstrations (Educational), Higher Education, Physics

Hilton, Wallace A. – Physics Teacher, 1981
Presents the author's viewpoints on the role, benefits, and mechanics of performing physics demonstrations. Suggests that teachers keep a demonstration file. Indicates that demonstrations can be set up in showcases or in hallways. (SK)
Descriptors: College Science, Demonstrations (Educational), Higher Education, Physics

Jackson, W. G.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1981
Describes kinetics experiments completed in a single two-hour laboratory period at 25 degrees Centigrade of nitrito to nitro rearrangement, based on the recently discovered base-catalysis path. Includes information on synthesis and characterization of linkage isomers, spectrophotometric techniques, and experimental procedures. (SK)

Wilson, David B. – American Journal of Physics, 1981
Surveys the research of scientists like Joule, Kelvin, Maxwell, Clausius, and Boltzmann as it comments on the basic conceptual issues involved in the development of a more precise kinetic theory and the idea of a kinetic atom. (Author/SK)

Cook, L. M.; And Others – Journal of Biological Education, 1980
Presents a method for calculating age specific expectation of life for human populations by examining obituary entries in newspapers, tombstones, and parish records. Examples are given which illustrate large differences between the sexes, social classes, and dates at a given locality. (Author/CS)
Descriptors: Age, Biology, College Science, Demography
