Wiebold, W. J.; Slaughter, Leon – Journal of Agronomic Education, 1986
Reviews a study that examined the effects of laboratories on the grade performance of undergraduates in an introductory crop science course. Results indicated that students enrolled in lecture and laboratory concurrently did not receive higher lecture grades than students enrolled solely in lecture, but did have higher laboratory grades. (ML)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Agricultural Education, Agronomy, College Science
Cassel, D. K. – Journal of Agronomic Education, 1986
Describes how a field research site provides grauduate soil physics students with practical field-oriented experiences. Explains the structure of the course and the nature of the course's investigations. Assesses the advantages and obstacles associated with the field research technique. (ML)
Descriptors: College Science, Course Descriptions, Experiential Learning, Field Instruction
Peer reviewedButler, James Johnson – Journal of Geological Education, 1986
Provides an overview of the educational system and the instructional approach employed with earth science education in The People's Republic of China. Reviews the major characteristics of secondary, undergraduate, and graduate programs. Cites representative institutions and explains their earth science programs. (ML)
Descriptors: College Science, Earth Science, Educational Practices, Foreign Countries
Peer reviewedSmith, Stephen M. – Journal of Geological Education, 1986
Describes an interactive, self-prompting BASIC program that can be incorporated in introductory and intermediate hydrology courses. Exlains how the program can be used to evaluate pumping test data and also to calculate transmissivity and storativity values of confined aquifers. The program is written for the IBM PC. (ML)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Courseware, Environmental Education
Peer reviewedMcEachran, David Ballard; Marshak, Stephen – Journal of Geological Education, 1986
Describes three microcomputer programs that allow geology students to deform two-dimensional images on a computer screen and then to measure changes in angular relationships. Two of the programs simulate pure and simple shear and the third simulates variations in shear strain that occur in shear zones. (ML)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Courseware
Peer reviewedRichardson, W. S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Describes a visual transparency method to develop the concept of resonance with respect to molecular resonance hybrid structures and partial charge on the atoms of an ion. Discusses the distinction between tautomerism and resonance, and emphasizes clarification of the Lewis structure concept. (JM)
Descriptors: Atomic Structure, Audiovisual Instruction, Chemical Equilibrium, Chemistry
Peer reviewedBrabson, G. Dana; Waugh, David S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Describes procedures involved with paper electrophoresis separation of amino acids, gel electrophoresis separation of DNA, and design of an electrophoresis tank. Describes experiments using paper (amino acids) and gel (deoxyribonucleic acid fragments). Provides material lists, procedures, and discussion. (JM)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science, DNA
