Peer reviewedPratt, C.; Hacker, R. G. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
A unidimensional latent trait model was used to test a single-factor hypothesis of the Lawson Classroom Test of Formal Reasoning. The test failed to provide a valid measure of formal reasoning. This was a result of test format which neglected aspects of formal reasoning emphasized by Inhelder and Piaget. (Author/DWH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Group Testing, Higher Education, Latent Trait Theory
Peer reviewedThompson, James G.; Myers, Nancy A. – Child Development, 1985
Investigates several variables' effects on children's inferential processes, including cause of target event, presence and timing of questions prior to recall, and inference type that the questions demanded. Children four and seven differed in logical, constrained, and unconstrained inference production; causal connections between story events…

Peer reviewedJansson, Lars C. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1986
Ordering theory was used in two studies to empirically determine hierarchies of developmental precedence for Piaget's 16 logical combinations. In study 1, subjects (N=94) responded to statements about odd and even numbers; in study 2, 30 subjects responded to statements about line segments. Results are reported and discussed. (Author/JN)

Peer reviewedMitchell, Basil – Oxford Review of Education, 1976
Because university teachers tend to be intellectually lazy and avoid sound, rigorous thought, it is emphasized that they should weigh evidence, assess arguments fairly, and take a partial stand on values and philosophies they hold. (ND)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Cognitive Processes, College Faculty, Educational Philosophy
Peer reviewedWeybright, Loren D. – Urban Review, 1976
Concludes that the role of the teacher as researcher in children's development of thinking and socialization through play is multi-dimensional. The initial function is the internal analysis of children's thinking and interaction within a variety of settings. (Author)

Peer reviewedSimon, Herbert A.; Hayes, John R. – Cognitive Psychology, 1976
A formal theory of human understanding was developed and embodied in a computer program, UNDERSTAND, which simulates the understanding processes. Due to the number of alternative processing choices, some assumptions were made which are analyzed based on their validity. (Author/DEP)

McNeil, Mary E.; Hood, Antonette W.; Kurtz, Patricia Y.; Thousand, Jacqueline S.; Nevin, Ann – Online Submission, 2006
The authors examine the literature that sets the foundation for a self-actualization model for teacher induction. The model is analyzed in light of data from a successful induction program designed to keep special education teachers in the profession. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)
Descriptors: Teaching (Occupation), Self Actualization, Beginning Teachers, Logical Thinking
Dudar, Abdur-Rahim Dib – 2002
This paper suggests that logic consists of a collection of propositions and operations of negation, conjunction, disjunction, implication, and equivalence. It points out that the operations on dispositions depend upon the truth-value of the propositions involved. This raises the questions, How do we know whether a proposition is true or false? and…

Peer reviewedYouniss, James – Child Development, 1974
Deaf children, seven to thirteen years old, were observed on concrete, transitional and formal operational tasks ranging from dual classification to combinatorial reasoning. Results were related to number of years of schooling. (ST)

Peer reviewedHarris, Lauren Jay – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1972
Study lends support to the view that the problem with left-right stems from the imperfect mastery of the basic discrimination, not from an inability to deal with the logic of relational concepts. (Author/CB)
