Gillett, Keith; Scott, William – Journal of Biological Education, 1982
Describes the relationship between a local authority field study centre (LEA) and the School of Education at the University of Bath, allowing students earning a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) to focus on field work at the center as part of their practice teaching. (Author/JN)

McConnell, D. – Journal of Biological Education, 1983
Examined ways in which students viewed a particular human biology degree course which involves five subject areas (anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, physiology, psychology). Also assessed their reaction to studying subjects from other disciplines which form an integral part of their degree course. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biology, College Science

Otto, Paul B.; Schuck, Robert F. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1983
Six biology teachers and 90 students participated in this study. Results indicate that teachers can be trained to use a systematic questioning technique, trained teachers can employ the technique in classroom settings, and students taught by the technique achieve higher and retain knowledge longer than those in control groups. (JN)

Adams, Clark E. – American Biology Teacher, 1983
Summarizes 19 literature sources identifying road-killed vertebrates and frequency of kill by numbers. Examples of how these animals can be incorporated into curricula (integrating biology, society, people, and values) are given, followed by an illustrated example of how a road-killed raccoon's skull demonstrated a human/wildlife interaction prior…

Glueck, Richard D. – Current: The Journal of Marine Education, 1983
Activities and instructional strategies for two multigrade lessons are provided. Activity objectives include describing an artificial reef (such as a sunken ocean liner) as an ecosystem, knowing animal types in the ecosystem, and describing a food web. (JN)

School Science Review, 1982
Presents procedures, exercises, demonstrations, and information on a variety of biology topics including labeling systems, biological indicators of stream pollution, growth of lichens, reproductive capacity of bulbous buttercups, a straw balance to measure transpiration, interaction of fungi, osmosis, and nitrogen fixation and crop production. (DC)

Simpson, Mary; Arnold, Brian – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1983
Suggests that failure to learn is often the result of inappropriateness of level of instruction and deficiencies in instructional procedures and educational strategies, and differentiates between the functions of criterion referenced tests and diagnostic tests. Results are reported from two studies of the teaching of osmosis and photosynthesis.…

Wallick, Lorna – Journal of Environmental Education, 1982
Interpretive Structure Modeling (ISM) helps learners integrate their knowledge of our environment. Demonstrated that educators, including two high school biology teachers, could learn ISM and conduct modeling sessions. Includes discussion of models, modeling building, types of models, modeling building and environmental education, and models and…

Gwinn, John F. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1982
Discusses an audio-tutorial anatomy and physiology course which was no more expensive to establish and operate than a traditional course. Topics include development of audio-tutorial materials, construction of facilities, space use, staffing, development of computer programs, and computer costs. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Biology, Computer Oriented Programs, Course Descriptions, Curriculum Development

Haukoos, Gerry D. – Community/Junior College Quarterly of Research and Practice, 1982
Examines the effects of slide-tape self-instructional modules on community college biology students' final course grades and feelings about course participation. Data indicate significant gains on one of four content area achievement tests, significantly better overall grades, and positive student reactions. (DMM)

Mintzes, Joel J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Introductory college biology students (N=101) reported frequencies of 20 overt, in-class teaching behaviors and rated the instructor on 12 measures of teaching effectiveness. Moderately strong relationships were found between student perceptions of "information-transmitting" behaviors and achievement, while generally stronger…
