Peer reviewedMills, David S. – American Journal of Physics, 1980
Describes the use of a time-sharing computer and an x-y plotter in a variation of the laboratory exercise on the physical pendulum. (HM)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Higher Education, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedBagchi, B.; Seyler, R. G. – American Journal of Physics, 1980
An integral equation for the s-wave bound-state solution is derived and then solved for a square-well potential. It is shown that the scattering solutions continue to exist at negative energies, and when evaluated at the energy of a bound state these solutions do reduce to the bound-state solution.
Descriptors: Atomic Structure, Atomic Theory, College Science, Energy
Peer reviewedAnderson, J. Gerard – American Journal of Physics, 1980
When examining complex waveforms by examining oscillograms from simple resonant circuits, interpretation problems occur. These problematic oscillograms are explainable by recognizing that the typical resonant filters pass significant amounts of several harmonics adjacent to the one intended. Adjacent harmonics effects are computed; resulting…
Descriptors: Acoustics, College Science, Electric Circuits, Higher Education
Peer reviewedVetterling, William T. – American Journal of Physics, 1980
Describes an apparatus that offers a very lucid demonstration of Poisson statistics as applied to electrical currents, and the manner in which such statistics account for shot noise when applied to macroscopic currents. The experiment described is intended for undergraduate physics students. (HM)
Descriptors: College Science, Electronics, Higher Education, Physics
Peer reviewedPatterson, Angela F. – Education in Science, 1980
Describes how the problem of low enrollment of girls in physics in a British high school was treated. (HM)
Descriptors: Educational Trends, Enrollment Rate, Females, High School Students
Peer reviewedKevles, Daniel J.; And Others – Science, 1980
The history of the sciences in America in 1880 is described as a time of considerable vitality in the disciplines of earth and life sciences. The natural scientific resources of the American continent are credited as contributing to the vitality. Pluralism of institutional support is discussed with a historical perspective. (SA)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Federal Government
Peer reviewedLarkin, Jill; And Others – Science, 1980
Focuses on human information processes and problem solving. Although a large body of knowledge is prerequisite to acquiring skill, the authors state that knowledge must be indexed by patterns that guide the person in a fraction of a second to relevant parts of the knowledge store. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Academic Achievement, Computers, Higher Education
Peer reviewedPhysics Teacher, 1980
Lists titles of articles, notes, and letters together with the names of their authors for Volume 18 of the "Physics Teacher." Classification is based upon an analysis of the contents rather than upon the titles alone. (CS)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Indexes, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedEgelstaff, P. A.; And Others – American Journal of Physics, 1981
Some simple undergraduate laboratory experiments are described, which verify the energy-momentum relationship of special relativity. These experiments have been designed either to be used as classroom demonstrations or to be carried out by second-year students. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Demonstrations (Educational), Higher Education, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedEdge, R. D., Ed. – Physics Teacher, 1981
Describes experiments, including the measurement of the magnetic moment of a magnet, using noncalibrated materials. Results of these experiments can be checked using calibrated equipment. (SK)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Magnets, Measurement
Peer reviewedPage, Ray – Physics Education, 1979
Discusses modular courses in technology, their aims, materials used, resources, and the philosophy behind their design and implementation. (GA)
Descriptors: Curriculum Development, Instructional Materials, Learning Modules, Modular Building Design
Peer reviewedFaughn, Jerry; Kuhn, Karl – Physics Teacher, 1979
Describes a series of computer tutorial programs which are intended to help college students in introductory physics courses. Information about these programs, which are either calculus or algebra-trig based, is presented. (HM)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Programs, Educational Media
Peer reviewedMcDermott, Lillian C.; And Others – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1980
Instructional strategies are described for a one-year program at the University of Washington which attempts to increase the number of minority students being admitted to health science professions. The strategies focus on the necessity of the laboratory, reasoning ability, examinations, and homework. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Biology, College Science, Curriculum Development, Higher Education
Peer reviewedAyscough, P. B.; And Others – Computers and Education, 1979
Discusses the application of computer-assisted learning methods to the interpretation of infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectra; and outlines extensions into the area of integrated spectroscopy. (Author/CMV)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, Computer Assisted Instruction, Flow Charts
Peer reviewedRamsay, Willa; Elliott, Walt – Physics Teacher, 1979
Describes the Career Oriented Pre-Technical Physics (COPP) curriculum. This curriculum, comprising 29 modules, uses a hands-on, practical, nature to stress the career-vocational aspects of physics. Students design their personal curricula and proceed at their own pace. Evaluative information, comparing this program with other physics curricula, is…
