Peer reviewedBrehman, Thomas R.; Qutub, Musa – Science Teacher, 1971
Descriptors: Bibliographies, Earth Science, Ecology, Environmental Education
Peer reviewedLandsberg, Helmut E. – Science, 1970
Reviews environmental studies which show that national climatic fluctuations vary over a wide range. Solar radiation, earth temperatures, precipitation, atmospheric gases and suspended particulates are discussed in relation to urban and extraurban effects. Local weather modifications and attempts at climate control by man seem to have substantial…

Peer reviewedMcCray, Richard A. – Science Teacher, 1970
Discusses areas of modern astronomy that owe their development largely to nonoptical radiation: radio, infrared, ultraviolet, and x-ray radiation. Indicates new observations favor the big-bang" model of the universe, for it is now established that the earth is expanding at a measurable rate. Annotated bibliography. (LS)

Matthews, William H., III – Sci Children, 1970
Discusses U.S. National Parks as natural laboratories for the study of ecology, geology, earth science, and botany. Suggests activities which will enable children to more fully appreciate the great age of the earth, its history, the complexity of its structure and composition, and the myriad plants and animals which inhabit it. Peer reviewedTalwani, Manik – Oceanus, 1983
New seismic techniques have been developed recently that borrow theory from academic institutions and technology from industry, allowing scientists to explore deeper into the earth with much greater precision than possible with older seismic methods. Several of these methods are discussed, including the seismic reflection common-depth-point…

Peer reviewedLearner, Robert J. – Science and Children, 1983
Several poems inspired by the dinosaur are presented together with comments on the scientific content related to the poems. The poems have been recorded as songs (one is sung to a combination of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and "Foolish Frog") and are available from the author. (JN)

Peer reviewedYelverton, Barbara; Grange, Dorothy – Science Teacher, 1983
To combine writing with science, the writing of cinquain poetry was incorporated into a unit on water. Instructions for writing the poetry and examples are provided. The cinquain exercise can be used for a wide variety of earth science excercises and is suitable for other science areas. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Earth Science, Interdisciplinary Approach, Poetry, Science Education
Peer reviewedCarpenter, John R. – Journal of Geological Education, 1981
Discusses a study conducted to determine whether college students in an environmental earth science course changed their commitment to environmental issues. The development of the environmental commitment scale used is also described. (WB)
Descriptors: Affective Behavior, Attitude Measures, Attitudes, Earth Science
Peer reviewedWay, John H., Jr. – Journal of Geological Education, 1982
Presents brief biographical sketches and achievements of the 1982 outstanding earth science teachers from each National Association of Geology Teachers region. Also includes list of state winners. (JN)

Crowley, Claude D. – Teacher, 1980
Presented are 25 inexpensive activities which will give students hands-on and creative experiences in botany, geology, meteorology, and ecology on or near the school grounds. (Author/SJL)

Peer reviewedHanson, Susan; And Others – Environment and Behavior, 1979
The study examines the effect of a prior tornado disaster occurring in a community and that community's current response to a tornado threat. The study concludes that it is not past experience with tornadoes that relates to response to warnings, but rather awareness. Experience is but one source of information contributing to their awareness. (RE)
