Oswalt, Ivar – Simulation & Gaming, 1993
Summarizes recent military simulation and gaming applications, discusses trends that are affecting their use and development, and describes organizations that are involved with military simulations. Highlights include areas of application, including education and training, analysis, mission support, and evaluation; measuring simulation…

Kennedy, Kristin; Schumacher, Phyllis – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1993
Describes the use of simulation to introduce the bootstrapping technique of creating confidence intervals for the mean, median, and variance. These bootstrap confidence intervals are compared to the traditional confidence intervals for the purpose of analyzing accuracy of the technique. A Minitab program to produce confidence intervals is…

Powers, Donald E.; And Others – Applied Measurement in Education, 1993
A small-scale simulation investigated the impact of making essay topics available to test takers before the test. Results with 11 college students reveal little effect of the prepublished topic. Implications for teacher licensure examinations are discussed with reference to the Praxis Series: Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers being…

Goodyear, Peter; And Others – Education and Computing, 1991
Reports on two aspects of the SIMULATE (Simulation Authoring Tools Environment) project: an account of the learning processes that are involved in learning with computer simulations, and an inventory of learner attributes. Topics discussed include ISLEs (intelligent simulation learning environments), prior knowledge, motivation, cognitive style,…

Gressard, Risa P.; Loyd, Brenda H. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1991
To determine the accuracy of simulated data sets, an investigation was conducted of the effects of item sampling plans in the application of multiple matrix sampling using both simulated and empirical data sets. Although results were similar, empirical data results were more precise. (SLD)

Gifford, Janice A.; Swaminathan, Hariharan – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
The effects of priors and amount of bias in the Bayesian approach to the estimation problem in item response models are examined using simulation studies. Different specifications of prior information have only modest effects on Bayesian estimates, which are less biased than joint maximum likelihood estimates for small samples. (TJH)

Stillman, Paula L.; And Others – Academic Medicine, 1990
Medical students (N=284) from four Northeastern medical schools interacted with standardized patients, then were given a free-response form (blank form for writing diagnostic impressions) and then they completed a cued-response form, which listed a series of diagnoses generated by the case author. The patients also completed a checklist. (MLW)

Lloyd, John S.; And Others – Academic Medicine, 1990
The extent that order effects in multiple-station clinical examinations are prevalent is addressed and an analysis of individual student score profiles pertaining to order effects is included. A clinical skills examination using standardized patients was administered to 157 medical students at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at…

Gross, Samuel R. – Journal of Legal Education, 1990
A clinical law simulation exercise based on students testimony about events in their own lives was designed to train students as effective trial lawyers through direct and cross-examination, sensitization to the roles of other courtroom players, and consideration of social and ethical consequences of our trial methods. Nugent, William R. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1991
Explains virtual reality as a computer-synthesized three-dimensional environment (cyberspace) in which human participants, appropriately interfaced, appear to be enveloped. Cyberspace in science fiction is discussed; contributions of aerospace and military simulation trainers, digital imaging, and motion picture special effects are described; and…

Jones, Richard C. – Science Teacher, 1993
Describes an activity to simulate the geometries of a spreading pathogen such as HIV throughout a generation. Students exchange "bodily fluids" three times and are then tested for the presence of "infection." Materials used include base solutions (NaOH or KOH), phenolphthalein (pH indicator), clear plastic cups, and an eye dropper. (PR)

Nandakumar, Ratna; Stout, William – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1993
A detailed investigation is provided of Stout's statistical procedure (the computer program DIMTEST) for testing the hypothesis that an essentially unidimensional latent trait model fits observed binary item response data from a psychological test. Three refinements achieve greater power. The revised approach is validated using real data sets.…

Beach, Barbara Kres – Training and Development, 1993
The director of Northwestern University's Institute for the Learning Sciences describes software that creates simulated environments in which learners focus on skills rather than facts. Also addressed are learning motivation and learning style issues. (SK)
