Peer reviewedColtheart, Max – Visible Language, 1981
Illustrates how one can test a multicomponent model of reading by observing the different forms that acquired reading disorder takes as a consequence of different patterns of damage to the brain. (HOD)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Models, Neurological Impairments, Phonology
Peer reviewedPelosi, Peter L. – Journal of Research and Development in Education, 1981
Various approaches to research about reading disablities are described in historical perspective. The development of reading diagnosis is discussed in terms of: (1) a shift from a medical to an educational concern; (2) the use of standardized tests; (3) the movement in diagnosis from psychological laboratories to the classroom; and (4) the use of…
Descriptors: Case Studies, Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities, Reading Diagnosis
Peer reviewedHicks, Carolyn; Jackson, Peter – Journal of Research in Reading, 1981
Forty dyslexic children were given a version of the Stroop test which requires subjects to respond to attributes of a set of stimuli while ignoring the conflicting information that derives from another attribute. A negative linear relationship emerged indicating that greater reading proficiency was associated with less interference. (MKM)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Elementary Education, Perception Tests, Reading Ability
Peer reviewedElterman, R. D.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1980
Brief case reports are presented for each of the seven Ss. The importance of both the symbol simulation and the vertical monitoring in evaluating the eye movement patterns in dyslexics was demonstrated. (Author/DLS)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Evaluation Methods, Exceptional Child Research, Eye Movements
Peer reviewedGentile, Lance M. – Journal of Reading, 1981
Provides a rebuttal to a television interview on the "Phil Donahue Show" in which John H. Richards suggested that many people suffer from an incurable disease called dyslexia and will never be able to read. Insists that with hard work, dyslexics can learn to read. (MKM)
Descriptors: Adults, Children, Dyslexia, Reading Achievement
Peer reviewedBryce-Smith, D.; Pickard, P.M. – International Journal of Early Childhood, 1980
Descriptors: Children, Dyslexia, Hyperactivity, Lead Poisoning
Peer reviewedPavlidis, George Th. – Reading, 1979
Describes experiments showing that the eye movement patterns of dyslexic children differed from those of normal and backward readers during both a reading and a nonreading task. Discusses possible causes of dyslexia and ways of diagnosing it. (GT)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Elementary Education, Eye Movements, Reading Diagnosis
Peer reviewedAaron, P. G. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1978
Twenty-eight reading disabled children (in grades 2-4) were divided (on the basis of the nature of errors made in a writing from dictation task), into two groups--analytic-sequential deficient and holistic-simultaneous deficient. (Author/PHR)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Elementary Education, Exceptional Child Research, Learning Disabilities
Peer reviewedMollica, Louisa A. – Reading Improvement, 1996
Describes six strategies for implementation in a reading remediation program for dyslexic children. Provides an example and rationale. Discusses reading difficulties most often found in dyslexic children. (RS)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Elementary Education, Reading Difficulties, Reading Improvement
Peer reviewedGallagher, A. M.; And Others – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1996
Assesses some phonological tasks of well compensated, high-functioning dyslexics, aged 18, whose reading ability had improved to within one standard deviation of the normal population. Compares them with matched controls. Finds they performed well on word recognition tests but worse on nonword reading and spelling, and worse (in terms of speed) on…
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Dyslexia, Reading Difficulties, Reading Fluency
Peer reviewedPickering, Joyce S. – Montessori Life, 2002
This article uses a question-answer format to present information for parents on dyslexia and attention deficit disorders (ADD). Information includes typical behaviors and skills of children with dyslexia or ADD, how parents can help their children, and the use of medication to control hyperactivity. (KB)
Descriptors: Attention Deficit Disorders, Children, Dyslexia, Hyperactivity
Peer reviewedRichardson, John T. E.; Wydell, Taeko N. – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2003
Compares United Kingdom college students with dyslexia and those with no reported disabilities in terms of demographic properties, programmes of study and academic attainment. Finds that students with dyslexia were more likely to withdraw during their first year of study and were less likely to complete their programmes of study, although with…

Peer reviewedBakker, Dirk J. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1997
This brief introduction to E. Jan Kappers' article "Outpatient Treatment of Dyslexia through Stimulation of the Cerebral Hemispheres" reviews the lifetime work of Kappers in the field of dyslexia. (CR)
Descriptors: Biographies, Brain Hemisphere Functions, Cognitive Processes, Dyslexia
Peer reviewedTiu, Rolando D., Jr.; Thompson, Lee A.; Lewis, Barbara A. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2003
This study tested the role of visual processing speed and IQ in reading with 124 children either with or without reading disability. Results indicated that processing speed explains a significant amount of variance in reading comprehension, as does IQ. Path analyses indicated that the effect of IQ on reading is partially mediated by decoding in…
Descriptors: Decoding (Reading), Dyslexia, Elementary Education, Intelligence Quotient
Peer reviewedRowcliffe, Stephen – School Science Review, 2002
Introduces teaching techniques to alleviate the problems dyslexic students face with both practical and written work in science that have been found not only to improve learning conditions for dyslexics, but also represent good teaching practice and can be of benefit to all learners in science. (Contains 25 references.) (Author/YDS)
