Olive, John – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2003
Nathan entered third grade having already constructed a Generalized Number Sequence (GNS) for whole numbers that enabled him to coordinate sequences of multiples to find a common multiple of two whole numbers. Nathan was able to apply the operations of his GNS to his understanding of part-whole relations and his emerging use of fractional…

Linn, Marcia C.; Rice, Marian – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1979
The Springs task, an individually administered measure of ability to criticize and control experiments, is described. The task has characteristics similar to Inhelder and Piaget's Bending Rods task; it yields scores on naming variables, controlling variables, and analyzing experiments. (See also RIE: ED 163 092.) Quinn, Robert – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1997
Presents a series of lessons that extend the concrete experiences many elementary students have had with attribute blocks to provide middle school students with informal opportunities to explore the concepts and properties of relations and functions. (DDR)

Wearne, Diana; Hiebert, James – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1988
A theory is proposed for how students develop competence with the written symbols of decimal fractions. Competence is viewed as the cumulative and sequential mastery of four separate cognitive processes. The theory was tested with small groups of students, most of whom were able to acquire the first two processes. (MNS)

Schmalz, Rosemary – Arithmetic Teacher, 1994
Presents observations about the influence of mathematics textbooks and suggests ways to use textbooks to advantage while reordering the sequence and emphasis of topics to allow time for alternative activities. The fifth-grade mathematics curriculum is examined as an example. (MKR)

Bullock, Janis R. – Dimensions of Early Childhood, 1992
Describes the ways in which primary grade science teachers can use hands-on scientific activities to answer children's questions about science. In such activities, children discover and experiment with materials and objects to understand scientific ideas and processes. Suggests that teachers should encourage children's curiosity. (BB)
