Langley, Pat; Carbonell, Jaime G. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1984
Reviews approaches to machine learning (development of techniques to automate acquisition of new information, skills, and ways of organizing existing information) in symbolic domains. Four categorical tasks addressed in machine learning literature are examined: learning from examples, learning search heuristics, learning by observation, and…

Imlah, W. G.; du Boulay, J. B. H. – System, 1985
Describes an attempt to build a computer-assisted language instruction program which can trap and comment on grammatical errors such as subject/verb agreement by a purely syntactic analysis, that is, without recourse to word meanings. The program aims to increase educational effectiveness and to reduce the number of separate stored answers.…

Cerella, John; And Others – Intelligence, 1986
Measures of verbal intelligence and abstract reasoning were taken on a group of 31 college-aged and 32 elderly adults, together with mental-processing rates associated with choice reaction time, primary memory scanning, and lexical decoding. Group means showed that verbal IQ and lexical decoding were intact in the elderly subjects. (Author/LMO)

Thorkildsen, Ron J.; And Others – Educational Research Quarterly, 1986
Artificial intelligence techniques are used in computer programs to search out rapidly and retrieve information from very large databases. Programing advances have also led to the development of systems that provide expert consultation (expert systems). These systems, as applied to education, are the primary emphasis of this article. (LMO)

Cummings, Jack A.; Moscato, Eileen M. – School Psychology Review, 1984
Recent research on the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery (WJPEB) is reviewed as it related to three issues: the mean score discrepancy issue, the verbal/nonverbal composition of the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Ability (WJTCA), and the WJTCA overlap with achievement and abundance of scores generated by the WJPEB. (DWH)

Chodzinski, Raymond T. – Canadian Counsellor, 1983
Investigated the Career Maturity Inventory (CMI) using 535 Canadian high school students. As expected, intelligence, grade, and sex were significant predictors of the CMI variables. However, evidence for discriminant validity was unsatisfactory and inconsistent with the theoretical framework of CMI. (JAC)

Roberts, Eileen; DeBlassie, Richard R. – Adolescence, 1983
Defines test bias as a phenomenon in which test scores result in negative outcomes for certain groups, often lower socioeconomic groups and minorities. Discusses three manifestations of test bias including content, atmosphere, and use bias and presents recommendations for remedying bias problems in testing the culturally different. (JAC)

Cromie, William J.; Edson, Lee – Mosaic, 1984
Intelligent relationships with people are among the goals for tomorrow's computers. Knowledge-based systems used and being developed to achieve these goals are discussed. Automatic learning, producing inferences, parallelism, program languages, friendly machines, computer vision, and biomodels are among the topics considered. (JN)

Sassenrath, Julius; And Others – American Educational Research Journal, 1984
Based on data gathered during their public elementary school education, two groups of 49 students in private and public schools were matched on age, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status and IQ. Their achievement test scores as high school seniors do not support the claim that private schools necessarily effect higher achievement. (BS)
