Graves, C. John – Science and Children, 1990
Described is an activity that uses discarded evergreen trees from Christmas. Tree age and growth characteristics are investigated by looking at the number of whorls and rings of the trunks. Extensions and follow-up activities are included. (KR)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Elementary School Science, Forestry, Graphs

Harvey, Margarette R. – Journal of Environmental Education, 1990
Evaluated is the impact of the landscape upon children in 21 schools in England. Past and present experiences of 8- to 11-year-old children were measured. Results indicate that both past and present experiences make a small but significant contribution to the children's development of botanical knowledge and environmental dispositions. (Author/CW)

Holland, A.; And Others – Journal of Biological Education, 1989
Described is a simple technique to monitor air pollutants and to simulate some of the features of roadside canopies. Included are the procedures, directions for the assembly of the apparatus, and a discussion of typical results. Graphs of sample data are presented. (CW)
Descriptors: Air Pollution, Biological Sciences, Biology, Botany
NatureScope, 1989
Provides instructions and diagrams for making a life-sized morpho butterfly to wear on the finger and a paper bromeliad. Includes a pattern for copying. (RT)
Descriptors: Art Activities, Art Materials, Biological Sciences, Botany

Eisen, Yehudit; Stavy, Ruth – American Biology Teacher, 1988
Reported are the differences in the understanding of concepts involved in photosynthesis and its role in ecology between students who had studied advanced biology and those who had not. Reports that the less experienced students had a poorer understanding of autotrophic respiration and energy aspects of photosynthesis. (CW)

Riss, Pam Helfers – Science Activities, 1994
Botany meets computer science in this activity, which challenges students to create a computerized seed catalog. Class members work together to develop a database of plants, much like the major seed companies do. (PR)
Descriptors: Computer Uses in Education, Databases, Elementary Secondary Education, High Schools
Beasley, Conger, Jr. – Buzzworm, 1992
Discusses the significance of the decisions made at the Eighth Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) when governmental delegates and nongovernmental organizations from around the world decided the fate of potentially threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. Particular emphasis is placed on the politics…
