A study of the predictive validity of selected admissions variables used by the University of Kentucky College of Medicine (Medical College Admissions Test subscores, undergraduate science grade point average (USGA), age, and Otis Test of Mental Ability) revealed the predictive validity of USGA and the MCAT quantitative subscore. Male and female Canadian medical students' scores on two psychometric measures were compared with college norms. The results contradict the sex-specific stereotype of the sex role deviant, low sexuality, female medical student. A total of 189 entering class medical students at Baylor College of Medicine were surveyed to test the hypothesis that personality traits, as measured by structured tests, are of at least equal importance to cognitive qualities in predicting medical school performance. A random sample of medical students was compared with others who were unable to cope with unanticipated academic frustration. Techniques of attribution therapy and desensitization in the counseling of these students proved to be effective in improving coping behavior in six of seven cases. (Author/LBH)
