The Week-end Intervention Program (WIP) used by Wright State University School of Medicine, which assesses the alcohol problems of those convicted of offenses such as drunk driving and then assists in finding treatment, is described. The results of a survey of patients at three community health centers operated by the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford are presented and discussed. The demographic, diagnostic, and prognostic characteristics of patients treated by house staff members rotating through the general medical wards of the Houston Veterans Administration Medical Center was studied. The data indicate that VA hospitals make a significant contribution to internal medicine training. (Author/MLW)

A modified Delphi survey technique was used to delineate diagnoses, management techniques, and procedural skills in seven subspecialty areas necessary for house officers in a primary care internal medicine training program. Gynecologic teaching associates taught third-year medical students to perform physical examination of the female pelvis and breasts. Evaluations by the students of this teaching method and assessment by the teaching associates of student problems were obtained from questionnaires. (Author/MLW)

A study of the achievement of medical students taking a reduced medical school course load for one or more years showed that an extended program may be useful for students pursuing personal or extracurricular interests and for some with academic problems but not for students with major emotional disturbances. A survey of directors of admissions and chairpersons of departments of psychiatry in U.S. and Canadian medical schools was undertaken concerning problems of the identification of students with emotional problems prior to admission and the role of psychiatry faculty members on the admissions committee. A study of faculty and student attitudes toward medical student self-evaluation and comparison of faculty and student evaluations of student performance revealed that the opportunity for self-evaluation was both useful and appreciated. Faculty and student ratings correlated closely. (MSE)

The American Board of Internal Medicine has requested that residency program directors certify the clinical competence of their candidates. Used a general systems model to evaluate a self-help support group for medical students (N=26). Results showed most medical students sought out support groups to fulfill social affiliation needs and gain better self-understanding. Members shared many leadership functions and generally found the groups meaningful. (JAC)
