Zimmerman, David R. – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1987
A review of research studies suggesting that girls who exercise vigorously may experience disruptions in maturational processes suggests that carefully-monitored sports participation and training have no effect on growth and maturation. (Author/CB)

Layne, Charles S.; Abraham, Lawrence D. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1987
This study of 10 seven- to nine-year-old boys was undertaken to determine the electromyographic activity of four muscles in the supporting leg during one foot static balancing. Results are presented and analyzed. (Author/MT)

Fleck, Steven J.; Kraemer, William J. – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1988
The physiological responses and adaptations which occur as a result of resistance training, such as cardiovascular responses, serum lipid count, body composition, and neural adaptations are discussed. Changes in the endocrine system are also described. (JL)
Descriptors: Body Composition, Cardiovascular System, Exercise Physiology, Human Body
Brown, Stanley P.; Cundiff, David E. – Health Education (Washington D.C.), 1988
The question of whether or not a lifelong program of exercise actually has a bearing on longevity is discussed. The effects of exercise on the aging process, and the longevity-exercise relationship are reviewed. The conflicting evidence on the subject is presented. (JL)

Grabe, Stephen A. and Widule, Carol J. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1988
This study attempted to identify 27 kinematic variables for the jerk (in weightlifting) which would discriminate between weightlifters of different skill levels. Identifying these generic characteristics may help coaches in training weightlifters to overcome shortcomings in their performance. Methodology and results are discussed. (Author/JL)

Norris, William; Norred, Robert – Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, 1988
A visit to the Exercise Physiology Laboratory at the University of Tennessee is part of a physical education class required of all undergraduate students. The laboratory demonstration stimulates student interest and enrollment in physical education. Benefits to students, the laboratory, and the school are described. (MT)

Smith, Everett L.; Gilligan, Catherine – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1987
Research has shown that bone tissue responds to the forces of gravity and muscle contraction. The benefits of weight-bearing exercise in preventing or reversing bone mass loss related to osteoporosis is reviewed. The effects of weightlessness and immobilization, and the possible effects of athletic amenorrhea, on bone mineral density are…

Pretorius, Deirdre M.; And Others – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1986
Forty-eight runners with runner's knee were examined, treated, and studied for 8 months to identify the causes of this injury and its response to a particular regimen of conservative management. Results are discussed. (Author/DF)

Jones, M. E.; And Others – Physiologist, 1985
Exchange of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) material between institutions is often impeded by incompatabilities of hardware, software, and curriculum. The use of a driver program is suggested to resolve these problems and facilitate exchange of instructional material. Technical details of the program described (and lessons used) are available…

Runyan, Charles M.; Runyan, Sara Elizabeth – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1986
The "fluency rules" therapy program for young children who stutter consists of seven rules designed to teach children about the physiologic concepts associated with fluent speech production. Pilot testing with nine children (three- to seven-years-old) demonstrated its effectiveness in producing fluent speech and maintaining fluency for a…

Eichner, Edward R. – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1986
Healthy hematologic adaptations to exercise are described. The benefits of increased performance for elite athletes and reduced risk of heart attack for the general population are stressed. The advisability of increased amounts of fish in the diet and low doses of aspirin to reduce coronary risk factors are discussed. (Author/MT)
Descriptors: Cardiovascular System, Eating Habits, Exercise, Exercise Physiology
Norman, Anthony W. – Physiologist, 1985
Discusses the physiology and biochemistry of the vitamin D endocrine system, including role of biological calcium and phosphorus, vitamin D metabolism, and related diseases. A 10-item, multiple-choice test which can be used to obtain continuing medical education credit is included. (JN)
