At the SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine the curriculum of the Department of Family Medicine requires that all sophomores spend eight half-days working with a family physician preceptor in his private practice and eight half-days in seminars. A survey of two state university medical schools' family practice graduates examined the extent of their moonlighting during residency and its perceived effects on their training, personal or family life, and finances. Medical school student and faculty perceptions of the ideal and actual role of faculty mentors were compared at a Missouri and a British medical school. Similarities were found in perceptions, suggesting that the role is a feasible one but also that, in mentor programs, the mentor's role and activities should be clearly defined. (MSE)

Ways to teach three types of interviewing skills are described, including giving information to patients, handling emotions on the part of patients, and motivating patients.
