The historical basis for the application of basic and medical sciences in the dental curriculum is presented. Current issues are examined and future perspectives in applying biological sciences to clinical dentistry are explored. Instructional packages used at the University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry are described that include a series of video-cassettes in which audiotaped recall and videotaped interactions have been combined as a means of analyzing the interpersonal dimension of dental care in the classroom. A laboratory experiment that demonstrates the effects of various dental materials on a representative enzyme from the pulp is outlined. A study of an analytical system for evaluating class II cavity preparations in primary teeth was developed, tested, and compared with the traditional global evaluation method with respect to intraexaminer and interexaminer reliability. A survey of dental schools elicited information about course offerings in sports dentistry, opinions about offering such a course, dental school construction of mouthguards for campus or outside athletes, and provision of treatment for athlete dental trauma. This report describes a dental model technique used at the Academy of Health Sciences, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The technique uses Dentoform which provides a realistic set of Ivorine plastic teeth set in rubber "gingivae" upon which operative dentistry, prosthodontics, and limited periodontal scaling can be practiced.
