Stepp, Richard D. – Physics Teacher, 1982
Discusses how the wheel works. The inherent mechanical advantage of wheel-and-axle system is that it reduced the distance the load-bearing surfaces have to slip relative to one another when the whole apparatus advances some given distance reducing (with leverage) the force needed to propel the system. Erickson, John – American Biology Teacher, 1983
Focusing on the centromere (kinetochore), discusses what term should be used to represent this cellular component. Also discusses centromere/kinetochore replication, structure of the kinetochore, and the nature of the binding material that holds until anaphase of mitosis and meiosis. (JN)

Serrano, Rodolpho G. – High School Journal, 1982
Investigated social networks and friendship patterns of high school physics students (N=10). Results did not support hypotheses that students would have established strong social networks and that friendship linkages would result in establishment of links composed of one best friend, one or two close friends, and one or two friends. (Author/JN)

Ignatz, Milton – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
This study set out to determine the relationship of each of 12 selected cognitive factors to physics achievement at the high school level. Multiple regression analysis indicated that the most promising predictors for boys were divergent production measures; convergent production for the girls. (Author/GK)

Sell, Nancy J.; Van Koevering, Thomas E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1981
Energy-Environment Simulators, provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, can be used to help individuals experience the effects of unbridled energy consumption for the next century on a national or worldwide scale. The simulator described is a specially designed analog computer which models the real-world energy situation. (MP)

Piburn, Michael – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Tested the hypothesis that spatial reasoning is a significant correlate both of formal thought, as defined by Piaget's measures of the proportionality schema, and of achievement in science. Sex differences in proportional reasoning and spatial skills in 6th-form (11- year-old) students from a New Zealand high school were also examined. (CS)
