McBride, John W.; Lamb, Charles E. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1991
The use of commercial games to design and construct games to drill specific mathematics skills is discussed. Game types discussed include card games and board games. Two game boards adapted from "Chutes and Ladders" and "Battleship" are provided. (CW)

Cullen, John F., Jr. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Presented is a computer simulation called "The Great Chemical Bead Game" which can be used to teach the concepts of equilibrium and kinetics to introductory chemistry students more clearly than through an experiment. Discussed are the rules of the game, the application of rate laws and graphical analysis. (CW)

Jauch, Lawrence R.; And Others – Simulation and Games, 1989
Reviews the development of integrated business policy and strategic management courses, or capstone courses, in business school curricula. A simulation game is described that incorporates the need for computer literacy, decision support systems (DSS), and interaction to effectively meet the needs for a capstone course. Rahim, Medhat; Sawada, Daiyo – School Science and Mathematics, 1989
Discusses an activity for the use of tangrams in which students flip, rotate, slide, or patch the pieces in order to construct a particular shape. Examples include provisions for constructing two trapezoids; transforming a scalene triangular region into quadrilaterals of equal area; and transforming a cross into a picture frame. (RT)

Reimer, Wilbert – Mathematics Teacher, 1989
Domino games are used to illustrate problem-solving techniques in a college principles-of-mathematics course. Students develop tables and use Pascal's triangle to find the total number of pips and the sum of numbers on the pieces. (DC)

Renaud, Lise; Suissa, Samy – American Journal of Public Health, 1989
Uses a post-test-only control group study to evaluate the effect of three different types of simulation games used to teach traffic safety to kindergarten students. Results suggest that games including role-playing/group dynamics and modeling/training can change attitudes and modify behavior with this age group. (FMW)

Bright, George W. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1988
Compares achievement effects and time-on-task generated for computer and non-computer versions of essentially the same game. Notes that students followed different rules for the same game and pace was faster for computer versions. Reports transfer of instruction may not be complete. (MVL)

Watson, Jim – Computing Teacher, 1988
Discussion of the use of databases as a teaching/learning tool focuses on their use in a classroom setting with one computer. Topics discussed include instructional strategies, small group and large group activities, and the teachers' role. Exercises and games are suggested and examples of worksheets are provided. Laurillard, Diana; Taylor, Josie – Journal of Educational Television, 1994
Describes an evaluative study of the use of interactive video in elementary and secondary school mathematics in the United Kingdom. The "Stepping Stones" game is described; and issues for the design of interactive media are discussed, including high quality sound and visuals, interactivity and pupil support, and activity off the…

Owens, John E. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1995
Describes how graphing calculators can be used to explore different functions, from linear to higher degree polynomials. "Globs" (circles) are drawn around randomly plotted points on the screen, and students devise functions that pass through as many of these globs as possible. Variations on the game are also mentioned. (DPM)

Mock, Carol – Political Science Teacher, 1990
Presents simulation materials for teaching the U.S. congressional budget process that was developed for an introductory course in public policy. Follows the class throughout the simulation experience. Includes a summary of the scenario and description of students' experiences with mechanics, schedule, assignments, roles, and rules. (NL)

Faulkner, Dorothy; Miell, Dorothy – International Journal of Early Years Education, 1993
Reports the findings from a pilot study that investigated the effects of friendship on four and five year olds during their first term in school. Results suggested that friendship played an important part in developing children's social and communicative competencies and influenced children's performance in classroom-based learning activities. (BB)
