Peer reviewedMcIntosh, Margaret E. – Mathematics Teacher, 1994
Offers suggestions for a unit on word study in geometry, including defining, recognizing, producing, and appreciating the concepts of geometry. Includes lists of terms and Greek and Latin word roots. (MKR)
Descriptors: Etymology, Geometry, Mathematics Education, Mathematics Instruction
Peer reviewedSnowling, Maggie; And Others – Applied Linguistics, 1991
Outlines some theoretical differences in the interpretation of nonword repetition and discusses how best these differences could be resolved. (eight references) (GLR)
Descriptors: Children, Language Processing, Linguistic Theory, Longitudinal Studies
Peer reviewedBriggs, L. D.; Richardson, W. D. – Reading Horizons, 1993
Determines the type and number of words that are in the environmental vocabularies of a selected group of second-grade students. Discusses the importance of parents and teachers assisting children to develop their environmental vocabularies. (RS)
Descriptors: Grade 2, Parent Participation, Primary Education, Reading Research
Visser, Annette – Guidelines: A Periodical for Classroom Language Teachers, 1989
An interactive vocabulary learning technique is described that uses a "core meaning" approach to help solve some of the problems learners have with English homonyms. The technique was used successfully with a class of adult learners but can be adapted for younger and less proficient learners. (four references) (LB)
Descriptors: English (Second Language), Foreign Countries, Second Language Instruction, Teaching Methods
Peer reviewedSmith, Robert E., III – Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, 1991
Notes that students new to technical writing frequently have difficulty grasping the essentiality of technical definitions and learning how to create appropriate definitions. Suggests that exercises centered around a term that is lapsing into obsolescence offer some productive solutions to this common instructional problem. (RS)
Descriptors: Definitions, Higher Education, Obsolescence, Teaching Methods
Peer reviewedMondria, Jan-Arjen; Boer, Marijke Wit-De – Applied Linguistics, 1991
Examines whether vocabulary acquisition in a foreign language by inferring the meaning of a word from its context makes an important contribution toward the retention of the word in question so long as the meaning is correctly guessed. (49 references) (GLR)
Descriptors: Context Clues, Inferences, Learning Strategies, Retention (Psychology)
Peer reviewedAnglin, Jeremy M. – Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development, 1993
Tested children in grades one, three, and five on their knowledge of a large sample of words. Found that comprehension of derived words improved dramatically from grade one to grade five and that words consisting of more than two morphemes were not well known by first graders but were relatively better known by fifth graders. (BC)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Morphemes, Morphology (Languages)
Peer reviewedMiller, George A.; Wakefield, Pamela C. – Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development, 1993
Comments on the research by Anglin reported in this monograph by considering two points. First, discusses possible problems in defining what a word is. Second, examines some problems with the methodology in vocabulary development research that involves testing individuals' knowledge of words by sampling words from dictionaries. (BC)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Dictionaries, Morphemes, Morphology (Languages)
Peer reviewedDiakidoy, Irene-Anna N. – European Journal of Psychology of Education, 1998
Explores the influence of reading comprehension on the acquisition of word meanings from context and compares it to the effects of local context characteristics, such as proximity and directness of context clues. Indicates that reading-comprehension level and prior main-concept knowledge facilitate vocabulary learning from context. (DSK)

Peer reviewedParisse, Christophe; Le Normand, Marie-Therese. – Journal of Child Language, 2000
Aims to give a thorough analysis of the morphosyntax produced at the outset of multi-word speech, with a classification of free language produced at 2 years by 27 French-speaking children. A classification performed with word sequences reveals surprisingly adult-like sequences of syntactic categories of words. (Author/VWL)
Descriptors: Adults, Child Language, French, Language Acquisition
Peer reviewedSavinainen-Makkonen, Tuula – Language and Speech, 2000
Reports on the early phonological development of six children learning Finnish. Primary focus is on their production of multisyllable targets. There was a tendency to reduce the last element of long words. Results also indicated that the segmental factor may influence the deletion pattern: the syllable that contained a stop was produced,…
Descriptors: Finnish, Language Acquisition, Language Typology, Phonology
Peer reviewedPearson, Barbara – International Journal of Bilingualism, 1998
Discusses measures of infants and toddlers developing vocabularies. Suggests that what is needed are norms derived from observations of typically-developing bilingual children, followed up by measures of concurrent and predictive validity. (Author/VWL)
Descriptors: Bilingualism, Infants, Language Acquisition, Measures (Individuals)
Peer reviewedMochizuki, Masamichi; Aizawa, Kazumi – System, 2000
Investigates the relationship between second language learners' (L2) vocabulary size and their affix knowledge and attempts to find out the order of affix acquisition. Results show that L2 learners affix knowledge correlated with their vocabulary size and that affixes could be ranked in terms of accuracy order. (Author/VWL)
Descriptors: Affixes, English (Second Language), Second Language Instruction, Second Language Learning
The Effect of Perceptual Similarity and Linguistic Input on Children's Acquisition of Object Labels.
Peer reviewedDiesendruck, Gil; Shatz, Marilyn – Journal of Child Language, 1997
Investigated whether and when children establish various semantic relations between old and new words. Fifty 2-year olds were taught labels for objects previously referred to by an overextended term. Findings are discussed in light of theories of lexical development, particularly with regard to conceptualizations of constraints on the acquisition…
