Burton, Grace M.; Meyers, Marcee J. – Mathematics Teacher, 1987
Specifics are given to help the "regular classroom" teacher assist the learning disabled (LD) student to overcome factors that interfere with performance. Sample relationships between LD deficits and possible difficulties in secondary mathematics are presented. (PK)

Schunk, Dale H.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1987
Two experiments investigate how attributes of peer models influenced achievement behaviors among children who had experienced difficulties learning mathematical skills in school. Children in the single-coping-model, multiple-coping-model, and multiple-mastery-model conditions demonstrated higher self-efficacy, skill, and training performance,…

Runco, Mark A.; Albert, Robert S. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1986
Two groups of boys and their parents were given five divergent thinking tests as one part of a longitudinal investigation on exceptional giftedness in early adolescence. Canonical and bivariate analyses indicated that there was a strong correlation between the adolescents' divergent thinking test scores and their parents' scores. (Author/LMO)

Sweetland, Robert D. – Classroom Computer Learning, 1984
Discusses a computer program requiring students to find an object on a grid by using location coordinates. The program, which provides a wide range of problem-solving activities, is a highly motivating approach to hands-on metric measurement, rounding off numbers, and plotting points on Cartesian coordinate systems. Includes complete program…

Meiers, Marion; Khoo, Siek Toon; Rowe, Ken; Stephanou, Andrew; Anderson, Prue; Nolan, Kathy – Australian Council for Educational Research, 2006
The development of strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills for all students is a very high priority for schools, education systems and governments. The ways in which children develop these skills during the crucial years of primary education are of major interest to all concerned with students' learning and development. The ACER…

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2005
The sample assessment items in this volume are sorted according to the strands of number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability. Because one goal of assessment is to determine students' abilities to communicate mathematically, the writing team suggests ways to extend or modify multiple-choice and…

Kramarski, Bracha; Mizrachi, Nava – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of forum discussion embedded within metacognitive guidance on mathematical literacy. In particular the study compares two learning environments: (a) Forum discussion with metacognitive guidance (FORUM+META); and (b) Forum discussion without metacognitive guidance (FORUM). Participants…

Torbeyns, Joke; Verschaffel, Lieven; Ghesquiere, Pol – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
This study investigated the fluency with which first-graders with strong, moderate, or weak mathematical abilities apply the decomposition-to-10 and tie strategy on almost-tie sums with bridge over 10. It also assessed children's memorized knowledge of additions up to 20. Children's strategies were analysed in terms of Lemaire and Siegler's model…

Wang, Wen-Ling – Online Submission, 2004
Previous findings have indicated that the reasoning abilities of gifted students are associated with gender differences. However, the factors affecting the emergence of gender differences, including age, remain to be studied. The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether the spatial, verbal and quantitative reasoning abilities of gifted…

Loeb, Susanna; Bridges, Margaret; Fuller, Bruce; Rumberger, Russ; Bassok, Daphna – National Bureau of Economic Research, 2005
Previous research has demonstrated that attending center care is associated with cognitive benefits for young children. However, little is known about the ideal age for children to enter such care or the "right" amount of time, both weekly and yearly, for children to attend center programs. Using national data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal…

Bonotto, Cinzia – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2003
In this report we present preliminary results of a study on the relationship between informal out-of-school and formal in-school mathematics and the ways each can inform the other in the development of new mathematical knowledge, in this case concerning computation in base 12, 24 or 60. This study is based on a teaching experiment involving a…

Contreras, Jose N.; Martinez-Cruz, Armando M. – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2003
In this study, we examined 139 prospective elementary teachers' solution processes to additive word problems for which the solution is 1 more or 1 less than the answer produced by the straightforward application of the addition or subtraction of the two given numbers. For each problem, five aspects of their solution processes were examined: (a)…
