Dauber, Susan L.; Benbow, Camilla Persson – Gifted Child Quarterly, 1990
When 340 extremely mathematically or verbally talented 13 year olds were compared to 111 modestly gifted students, no differences were found in group activity participation or personality traits. In their ratings of peer perceptions, the modestly gifted exceeded the extremely gifted in being considered athletic and popular and in social standing.…

Watson, Jane M. – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1988
Presents a selection of solutions of the "Three Hungry Men" problem from grade three to college students with three different strategies used: backward, forward, and forward/backward strategies. Provides error patterns in each strategy. Discusses some implications for teaching of problem solving. (YP)

Mac Iver, Douglas – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1988
The effects of classroom practices on stratification of students' self-perceptions of math ability were estimated in 67 upper elementary math classes (N=1,612 students) from predominantly White, middle-class communities. Results suggest that the effects of task structure depend on the actual dispersion of ability levels in the class. (SLD)

Owen, Elizabeth; Sweller, John – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1989
Research of expert-novice differences is reviewed seeking to show experts possess a large body of domain specific knowledge. It was postulated that experts possess schemas enabling them to classify problems, call up the appropriate automated rules, then apply these to obtain the solution. (DC)
