Rubin, B.; Herman, R. M. – American Journal of Physics, 1981
A known but often overlooked property of optical monochromators is discussed in view of its current applications. It is shown that grating and prism monochromators hold on to light for time durations proportional to resolving power and that the dispersing ability of monochromators extends to pulses of arbitrarily short duration. Terras, Riho; Swanson, Robert A. – American Journal of Physics, 1980
Considers the electrostatic problem of a point charge in a domain bounded by conducting planes. Lists all such domains for which a solution by images exists, describes the image charge arrays in familiar crystallographic terms, and gives an illustrative example. (Author/GS)

Press, William H. – American Journal of Physics, 1980
Reviews calculations that derive an order of magnitude expression for the size of man in terms of fundamental constants, assuming that man satifies these three properties: he is made of complicated molecules; he requires an atmosphere which is not hydrogen and helium; he is as large as possible. Holton, Gerald – American Journal of Physics, 1980
Using the example of Hans Christian Oersted's (1777-1851) discovery that magnetic fields surround currents as a focal point, it suggests, by using different historical examples, that science and history be brought together in a kind of conjunction for scholarly research and classroom purposes, for both scientists and nonscientists. Newman, J. N. – Oceanus, 1979
Discussed is the utilization of surface ocean waves as a potential source of power. Simple and large-scale wave power devices and conversion systems are described. Alternative utilizations, environmental impacts, and future prospects of this alternative energy source are detailed. (BT)

Allen, Philip B. – Physics Teacher, 1979
Examines Drude's classical (1900) theory of electrical conduction, details the objections to and successes of the 1900 theory, and investigates the Quantum (1928) theory of conduction, reviewing its successes and limitations. (BT)

Brimhall, James – Physics Teacher, 1979
Using practical applications of the principles of elementary physics, the author details how beekeepers can monitor the weight of their colonies. The weighing technique described involves no costly equipment, is not limited to a single colony, and is developed from the principles of physics for rigid body equilibrium. (BT)

Mammano, Nicholas J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Details the procedures used in utilizing the hydrogen bubble incident at Three Mile Island to relate these basic chemical principles to nuclear chemistry: gas laws, Le Chatelier's principle and equilibrium, and stoichiometry. (CS)
