Personal responsibility for health is dependent upon accurate knowledge and skill in self-care. Testicular cancer incidence is the leading cancer in young adult males. This article describes the development and evaluation of a testicular cancer education program which is now available nationwide to college health services. (Author/MT)

Compared a checklist of distress behaviors to patient (N=67) and observer ratings of pain and anxiety. Results indicated that children showed greater evidence of behavioral distress than adolescents only during the actual medical procedure; however, additional behaviors were observed that suggested that the checklist was age biased. To define the educational goals and problems of nurses caring for cancer patients in Vermont, a survey was conducted. The most heavily favored topics were those related to helping the patient adapt to illness. Commonly cited difficulties were poor communication with doctors and negative attitudes of coworkers. Investigated respondents' (N=162) feelings about and willingness to volunteer to help a dying cancer patient versus a patient with cancer in remission or one portrayed as having a broken leg. Cancer is due to environmental exposure rather than genetic factors. The health educator, by increasing students' awareness of the cancer problem, can assist in the development of cancer prevention programs. Five goals are described for the development of a course in environmental cancer. (JN)
