Peer reviewedGettinger, Maribeth – American Educational Research Journal, 1989
Estimates of time spent in and time needed for learning were obtained for 118 third-graders on specific tasks. Maximizing time spent resulted in significantly higher 1-day retention scores for 63 students spending less time than needed but did not affect retention for 55 students spending more time than needed to learn tasks. (SLD)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Comparative Analysis, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students
Peer reviewedChoate, Joyce S. – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1990
The initial step of a strategic process for solving mathematical problems, "studying the question," is discussed. A lesson plan for teaching students to identify and revise arithmetic problems is presented, involving directed instruction and supervised practice. (JDD)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Learning Strategies, Lesson Plans, Mathematics Instruction
Peer reviewedSeddon, Thomas E. – Mathematics Teacher, 1990
Strategies for teaching general mathematics effectively are discussed. Stressed are the use of calculators for arithmetic, individualized instruction, and teaching mathematics in context. Applications to vocational education are described. (CW)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Context Effect, Learning Strategies, Mathematical Applications
Peer reviewedGauthier, Lane Roy – Journal of Reading, 1990
Presents two strategies (inverse cloze and building content vocabulary) designed to develop middle school students' language competency, thereby allowing them to forge the necessary connections between and among the variety of concepts contained in content material. (RS)
Descriptors: Cloze Procedure, Content Area Reading, Junior High Schools, Learning Strategies
Peer reviewedMassoumian, Bijan – TechTrends, 1989
Discusses the use of interactive video in distance education and emphasizes the need for qualified instructors who can be effective with new teaching strategies. Topics discussed include telecommunications equipment; communication skills needed for working with video technology; maintaining learners' attention; and guidelines for visual graphics…
Descriptors: Communication Skills, Distance Education, Graphic Arts, Guidelines
Peer reviewedRodriguez, Joaquin; Brainard, Alan J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Considers pressure, volume, entropy, temperature, Helmholtz free energy, Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and internal energy. Suggests the mnemonic diagram is for use with simple systems that are defined as macroscopically homogeneous, isotropic, uncharged, and chemically inert. (MVL)
Descriptors: Chemical Nomenclature, Chemistry, College Science, Cues
Peer reviewedNelson, David J.; Barresi, Anthony L. – Journal of Research in Music Education, 1989
Reports on a study designed to determine whether there is a common level of logic, related to age, underlying children's responses to musical and spatial analogical tasks. Finds that there is a relationship between age and children's responses to analogical tasks whether one uses musical or spatial relationships. Discusses implications for music…
Descriptors: Age Differences, Developmental Stages, Educational Research, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedMoynihan, Mary Minard – Teaching Sociology, 1989
Describes writing exercises that stimulate learning while not burdening the instructor. Discusses simulations in which students are asked to write a diary entry about the daily experiences of a 75-year-old, to formulate a marriage contract, and to write a letter to a friend describing the student's worst job experience. (KO)
Descriptors: Classroom Techniques, Higher Education, Learning Strategies, Simulation
Peer reviewedHamilton, Richard – Journal of Experimental Education, 1989
The effects of asking 48 undergraduates to generate personal examples of target concepts on learning of psychological concepts from prose were evaluated. This elaboration activity produced a significant positive effect. Elaboration processes seemed to influence the transfer of concepts to problem-solving, especially for lower ability students.…
Descriptors: Academic Ability, Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation, Higher Education
Peer reviewedWenden, Anita – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1988
A discussion of language curriculum design for promoting learner autonomy looks at the objectives of such a curriculum, the learning implied by those objectives, and the function and relevance of the learnings. (Author/MSE)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Curriculum Design, Educational Objectives, Language Processing
Knox-Quinn, Carolyn – Computing Teacher, 1988
Discusses the development of expert system shells and the use of expert systems as instructional tools, and describes a program which required junior high school students using Macintosh computers to create a knowledge base on topics of their choice. Benefits of such student-created expert systems are discussed. (LRW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Computer Assisted Instruction, Expert Systems, Instructional Innovation
Peer reviewedHerrington, Anne J. – Research in the Teaching of English, 1989
Traces the development of studies of writing related to teaching and learning that have appeared in "Research in the Teaching of English" (RTE) between 1966 and 1986. Finds that RTE has served to both maintain the dominant paradigm and act as a forum for calls to pursue other research approaches. (JAD)

Peer reviewedGoldman, Susan R. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1989
Experiments in strategy instruction for mathematics have been conducted using three models (direct instruction, self-instruction, and guided learning) applied to the tasks of computation and word problem solving. Results have implications for effective strategy instruction for learning disabled students. It is recommended that strategy instruction…

Peer reviewedSpeth, Carol; Brown, Robert – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1988
Describes study of 383 college students in educational psychology classes that was designed to determine how students describe study activities. Completed inventories are compared from three theoretical perspectives: cognitive processes, approaches to learning, and autonomous studying, and factor analyses are explained. (25 references) (LRW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Comparative Analysis, Educational Psychology, Factor Analysis
DeJoy, Judith K.; Mills, Helen H. – Educational Technology, 1989
Describes a series of evaluation criteria for self-instructional materials for adult learners that focuses on computer-assisted instruction and interactive video instruction. Five categories are included: (1) content; (2) instructional strategies; (3) instructional presentation; (4) documentation; and (5) technical aspects. (10 references) (LRW)
