Common practices of presidential searches and presidential selection could be explicitly and implicitly reinforcing norms of whiteness across leadership searches on campus. Findings of the pervasiveness of whiteness in the presidential selection process include a hidden curriculum, the need for candidates to conform to white standards, the burden of double consciousness on candidates of color, and the critical role that other stakeholders such as search firms and trustee boards play in the presidential search process. This article suggests efforts that institutional stakeholders can make to improve the overall racial diversity of college and university leaders by questioning and improving various stages of the search process.
