Mergen, A. Erhan; Pray, Thomas F. – Simulation & Gaming, 1992
Reviews the development and the principal elements of total quality management (TQM) and demonstrates methods for introducing some of the key elements into a strategy-oriented business simulation game that can be used to teach future managers. Topics discussed include increased focus on the customer; continuous improvement; and competitive…

Frei, H. P.; Schauble, P. – Information Processing and Management, 1991
Describes a new effectiveness measure as an alternative to the traditional evaluation measures of recall and precision in information retrieval systems. The statistical approach--which compares two retrieval algorithms--is explained, the information needs of the user are considered, and an experiment with a test collection of abstracts is…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Comparative Analysis, Evaluation Methods, Information Retrieval

Armstrong, Ronald D.; And Others – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1994
A network-flow model is formulated for constructing parallel tests based on classical test theory while using test reliability as the criterion. Practitioners can specify a test-difficulty distribution for values of item difficulties as well as test-composition requirements. An empirical study illustrates the reliability of generated tests. (SLD)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Computer Assisted Testing, Difficulty Level, Item Banks

Stocking, Martha L.; Swanson, Len – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1993
A method is presented for incorporating a large number of constraints on adaptive item selection in the construction of computerized adaptive tests. The method, which emulates practices of expert test specialists, is illustrated for verbal and quantitative measures. Its foundation is application of a weighted deviations model and algorithm. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Algorithms, Computer Assisted Testing, Expert Systems

Wilson, Mark; Adams, Raymond J. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1993
A marginal maximum likelihood estimation algorithm is presented for the ordered partition model of M. Wilson that does not require the set of available responses to be fully ordered. The model and its estimation algorithm are illustrated in a comparison of alternative scoring schemes for open-ended science items. (SLD)

Chen, Hsinchun; Houston, Andrea L.; Sewell, Robin R.; Schatz, Bruce R. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
This study found that a Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm for browsing can categorize a large and eclectic Internet-information space into manageable sub-spaces that users can navigate to find relevant home pages. An automatically generated concept-space algorithm for searching was shown to enhance keyword-based Internet searching.…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Concept Mapping, Information Retrieval, Information Seeking

Melucci, Massimo – Information Processing & Management, 1998
Presents a probabilistic technique to retrieve passages from texts having a large size or heterogeneous semantic content. Results of experiments comparing the probabilistic technique to one based on a text segmentation algorithm revealed that the passage size affects passage retrieval performance; text organization and query generality may have an…

Orwig, Richard E.; Chen, Hsinchun; Nunamaker, Jay F., Jr. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1997
Describes research using an artificial intelligence approach in the application of a Kohonen Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to the problem of classification of electronic brainstorming output and an evaluation of the results. The graphical representation of textual data produced by the Kohonen SOM suggests many opportunities for improving information…

Eggen, T. J. H. M.; Straetmans, G. J. J. M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2000
Studied the use of adaptive testing when examinees are classified into three categories. Established testing algorithms with two different statistical computation procedures and evaluated them through simulation using an operative item bank from Dutch basic adult education. Results suggest a reduction of at least 22% in the mean number of items…

Sircar, Sabyasachi – Advances in Physiology Education, 1998
Argues that there is a whole class of physiological topics that are best taught using dynamic diagrams, a series of diagrams generated through simple animations and based on user-provided inputs. Uses the theory of neural generation as an example. (DDR)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Computer Graphics, Computer Uses in Education, Foreign Countries

Pushkin, David B. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1998
Addresses the distinction between conceptual and algorithmic learning and the clarification of what is meant by a second-tier student. Explores why novice learners in chemistry and physics are able to apply algorithms without significant conceptual understanding. (DDR)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Chemistry, Cognitive Psychology, Concept Formation

Ben-Zeev, Talia; Star, Jon R. – Cognition and Instruction, 2001
This study investigated whether undergraduate students encode spurious correlations in memory and exhibit them during the learning process leading to ineffectual problem solving. Findings suggested that even experienced students relied on surface-structure feature-algorithm correlations for solving new problems. Findings pose implications for…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Correlation, Encoding (Psychology), Error Patterns
Galeev, Ildar – Educational Technology, 1999
Discusses the development and introduction of expert tutoring systems (ETS), or intelligent tutoring systems. Explains MONAP-PLUS, an example of an authoring tool for the design of an ETS that includes models of the subject domain, the learner, and the learning process; a user-friendly interface; and techniques for developing algorithmic…

Dupee, B.; Martinez, Raquel; Tapia, Santiago – International Journal of Computer Algebra in Mathematics Education, 1999
Describes a prototype package that uses algorithms created within the symbolic algebra system Axiom, numerical routines from the NAG Libraries together with the easy-to-use facilities of modern graphical interfaces. Considers the implementation of different techniques, both symbolic and numeric, for the analysis and calculation of interpolating…
Descriptors: Algebra, Algorithms, Computer Uses in Education, Educational Technology
Jones, Mark K.; And Others – 1994
The design of a re-usable instructional algorithm for computer based instruction (CBI) is described. The prototype is implemented on IBM PC compatibles running the Windows(TM) graphical environment, using the prototyping tool ToolBook(TM). The algorithm is designed to reduce development and life cycle costs for CBI by providing an authoring…
