Peer reviewedMak, Kendrew K. W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
NMR spectroscopy is presented. It is seen that the experiment regarding the synthesis and resolution of 1,1'-Bi-2-naphtol presents a good experiment for teaching organic synthesis and NMR spectroscopy and provides a strategy for obtaining enantiopure compounds from achiral starting materials.

Peer reviewedWilley, Joan D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A simple experiment was conducted for studying and demonstrating visually and dramatically the effect of ionic strength on the solubility of an electrolyte is described. It is seen that the experiment visually illustrates the effect of ionic strength on electrolyte solubility by the appearance of the two solutions and by the difference in the…

Peer reviewedAnderson, Stanley E.; Saiki, David; Eckert, Hellmut; Meise-Gresch, Karin – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
An experiment that can be used to directly study the local chemical environments of phosphorus in solid amorphous materials is demonstrated. The experiment aims at familiarizing the students of chemistry with the principles of solid-state NMR, by having them synthesize a simple phosphate glass, and making them observe the (super 31)P NMR spectrum,…

Peer reviewedDapia, Sonia; Vila, Carlos; Dominguez, Herminia; Parajo, Juan Carlos – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The lab experiment described starts from the principles developed by Sensel and Myers, but the experimental procedure are modified to provide a more reliable experiment assessment. The mass transfer equation is solved and all the involved parameters are calculated by a simple, numerical method.

Peer reviewedKwan, Eugene E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A simple framework for evaluating experimental kinetic data to provide support for Specific Acid Catalysis (SAC) and General Acid Catalysis (GAC) is described based on the factors affecting their relative efficiency. Observations reveal that increasing the SAC-to-GAC rate constant ratio reduces the effective pH range for GAC.

Peer reviewedTreadwell, Edward M.; Black, T. Howard – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
An experiment illustrating stereochemical principles, like different physical properties in achiral environments, assignment of absolute stereochemistry, and the stereoisomeric relationships to differences in absolute stereochemistry is devised. A demonstration of how enantiomers have the same physical properties until placed in chiral…

Peer reviewedMacFarland, Darren K.; Gorodetzer, Rebecca – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
Organometallic complex synthesis in advanced inorganic or organic courses usually begin with the synthesis of ferrocene. A synthetic experiment of an alternative compound that has a more interesting structure and the same air stability that makes ferrocene desirable is presented.
Descriptors: Chemistry, Science Education, Science Experiments, Metallurgy
Peer reviewedNewton, Thomas A.; Hill, Beth Ann – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Application of conductivity tools in nonaqueous solvents is described with the help of experiments, which display specific characteristics of the SN1 mechanism. Changes in the most essential variables of the SN1 mechanism demonstrate the impact on the solvolysis rates.

Peer reviewedGugliotti, Marcos – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The unique occurrence of the upward motion of a thin film of wine, and its formation into drops inside the wall of a wine glass is explained. Evaporation of alcohol generates a surface tension gradient, moving the film of wine upwards on the internal sides of a wine glass, where it collects and forms into drops or tears.

Peer reviewedPelter, Michael W.; Pelter, Libbie S. W.; Colovic, Dusanka; Strug, Regina – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The sequence of microscale mixing of 1-bromo-3-chloro-5-iodobenzene along with reductive deamination of 4-bromo-2-chloro-6-iodoaniline is described. This novel deamination approach is beneficial in final product separation and higher product output.
Descriptors: Chemistry, Science Experiments, Evaluation Methods, Science Education
Peer reviewedPeters, Steven J.; Stevenson, Cheryl D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A student friendly experiment that teaches several important concepts of modern nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), like multinuclear capabilities, the NMR time scale, and time-averaged signals, is described along with some important concepts of thermo chemical equilibria. The mentioned experiment involves safe and inexpensive compounds, such as…

Peer reviewedComet, M.; Schreyack, L.; Verdan, S.; Burato, G.; Fuzelier, H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Exfoliated-compressed graphite materials are examined. A chemical explanation for the pseudo-exfoliation phenomenon is proposed.

Peer reviewedSantos, Andre L.; Takeuchi, Regina M.; Oliviero, Herilton P.; Rodriguez, Marcello G.; Zimmerman, Robert L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The production of a GPC-based material by submitting a cross-linked resin precursor to control thermal conditions is discussed. The precursor material is prepolymerized at 60-degree Celsius in a mold and is carbonized in inert atmosphere by slowly raising the temperature, the rise is performed to avoid change in the shape of the carbonization…

Peer reviewedWhite, Colin; Ophardt, Charles – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Inductors are substances that undergo a reaction and in so doing markedly accelerate or induce a simultaneous reaction. An experiment showing a reaction involving the oxidation of iodide to iodine by chromium (VI) found to be slow in the absence of acid, but which proceeded rapidly when iron (II) was induced is demonstrated.

Hongyi Wang – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A study uses the ChemDraw nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) tool to process 15 para-substituted benzoic acids and generate (super 13)C NMR chemical shifts of C1 through C5. The data were plotted against their pK[subscript a] value and a fairly good linear fit was found for pK[subscript a] versus delta[subscript c1].
