Peer reviewedRietveld, A. C. M. – Language and Speech, 1980
Investigated three acoustical features of word boundaries between French nouns and adjectives. Found that fundamental frequency, duration, and intensity all appeared to be acoustical correlates of word boundaries. Indicated that the temporal structure of the speech material was the most important cue for the detection of the word boundaries.…

Peer reviewedRaphael, Lawrence J.; And Others – Language and Speech, 1980
Shows that vowel duration is a cue to voicing of syllable-final consonants. Notes that the effective duration of a vowel apparently extends over all parts of the acoustic signal, including the transitions reflecting the consequences of the coarticulation of vowel and consonant. (Author/RL)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Articulation (Speech), Auditory Perception, Consonants
Peer reviewedPalmer, David H. – Science Scope, 2003
Introduces a functional model of sound transmission through solids and gases. Describes procedures of an activity to model how sound travels faster through solid materials than gases. Use dominoes to represent the particles of solids and gases. (KHR)

Peer reviewedLeger, Daniel W.; And Others – Child Development, 1996
Parents, and adults inexperienced in child care rated intensities of infants' cries. The groups did not differ in their ratings. The cries of 6-month olds were rated more intense than 1-month olds. Amplitude and noisiness of cry predicted adult judgments of 1-year olds' cries. A measure of amplitude ratio predicted ratings of 6-month olds' cries.…

Peer reviewedZeskind, Philip Sanford; Barr, Ronald G. – Child Development, 1997
Conducted spectrum analysis of standard and vociferous cries from infants with Wessel's colic, non-Wessel's colic, and comparison infants. Vociferous cries had longer duration, higher fundamental frequency, and greater percentage of dysphonation than standard cries. After feedings, problematic criers had greater percentage of dysphonation in…

Peer reviewedMetz, Dale Evan; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1990
The study examined the relationship between 28 segmental and suprasegmental acoustic parameters of speech production and measures of speech intelligibility for 40 severely to profoundly hearing-impaired persons (mean age 21 years). Findings support the tractability of employing selected acoustic variables for the estimation of speech…

Peer reviewedThomsen, Volker – Physics Teacher, 1996
Discusses the Doppler effect for relative motion between a source of waves and an observer and the orbital dynamics of communications satellites. Presents preliminary calculations of the satellite's altitude and linear velocity using only the concepts of the Doppler shift and the mechanics of motion in a circular path. (JRH)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Communications, Communications Satellites, Mechanics (Physics)
Peer reviewedWilliams, S. M.; And Others – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1995
Examines the development of a computational model of auditory grouping processes informed by psychoacoustic experimentation. The experimental theme was to quantify the contribution of grouping principles, rather than simply to demonstrate their existence. This article demonstrates the importance of avoiding prespecified procedures for grouping…

Peer reviewedRyde, Stephen – Australian Science Teachers Journal, 1995
Presents a procedure to demonstrate how the speed of sound in air or within a denser gas can be calculated quickly and accurately in the laboratory. (MKR)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Demonstrations (Science), Density (Matter), Physics
Peer reviewedAndruski, Jean E.; And Others – Cognition, 1994
Investigated whether college students' lexical access is affected by inherent acoustic variations that contribute to the identity of a phonetic feature. Results suggest that activation levels of words in the lexicon are graded, depending on the subphonetic shape of the input word, and that words phonologically similar to the test words are also…

Peer reviewedTyler, Ann A.; Saxman, John H. – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1991
Speech sound production changes occurring during acquisition of initial voice contrast by phonologically disordered children were compared with those occurring with normal children by analyzing target stop productions along the temporal measure of voice onset time (VOT). Phonologically disordered subjects displayed different patterns of voice…

Peer reviewedWinholtz, William S.; Ramig, Lorraine Olson – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1992
This paper describes the Vocal Demodulator as a new device for analysis of vocal tremor. The Vocal Demodulator produces amplitude-demodulated and frequency-demodulated outputs and measures the frequency and level of low-frequency tremor components in sustained phonation. The paper describes quantification of the demodulation process, validation…

Peer reviewedNeuman, Arlene C.; Eisenberg, Laurie – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
A 2-microphone dereverberation technique was evaluated by obtaining speech recognition measures and preference judgments from 10 normal-hearing adults and 7 older adult hearing-impaired listeners. Both groups had higher scores at the shorter reverberation time than at the longer reverberation time. Hearing-impaired subjects performed significantly…

Peer reviewedFlowers, James – Technology Teacher, 1993
Offers information about music as a science and as a form of communication. Describes classifications of musical instruments and advances in electronic musical technology. Includes two design briefs (student learning activities). (JOW)

Peer reviewedDahr, Sumit; Long, Glenis R.; Culpepper, N. Brandt – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 1998
The ILO92 was used to determine the level of Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) at 2f1-f2 for 16 combinations of primary levels in the range of 40 to 80 dB SPL from 40 unimpaired adult ears. An overall increase of DPOAE amplitude with increase in primary level was observed. (Author/CR)
