Peer reviewedVan Dyke, Linda – Volta Review, 1982
An inservice training model for successful implementation of FM (Frequency Modulation) transmission systems for hearing impaired students must take into account its purpose and functions, mechanics, and management. (CD)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Audio Equipment, Hearing Impairments, Inservice Teacher Education
American School and University, 1982
The new fine arts complex at Memphis State University (Tennessee) has extensive south-facing windows and massive Trombe walls, composed of concrete blocks that absorb heat and release it slowly, that together provide about 20 percent of the building's heat. Part of the masonry was also designed to absorb sound. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Acoustic Insulation, Architectural Character, Arts Centers, Energy Conservation
Peer reviewedBeyer, Robert – Physics Today, 1981
Surveys 50 years of acoustical studies by discussing selected topics including the ear, nonlinear representations, underwater sound, acoustical diagnostics, absorption, electrolytes, phonons, magnetic interaction, and superfluidity and the five sounds. (JN)
Descriptors: Acoustics, College Science, Ears, Hearing (Physiology)
Peer reviewedWhitehead, Robert; Barefoot, Sidney – American Annals of the Deaf, 1980
The study investigated the rate of oral air flow for plosive consonants produced by 10 normal hearing adult males, 10 hearing impaired adult males who demonstrated intelligible speech, and 10 hearing impaired adult males with semi-intelligible speech. (Author)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Adults, Componential Analysis, Consonants
Peer reviewedFujisaki, Hiroya – Language and Speech, 1980
Augments Michael Studdert-Kennedy's state-of-the-art report on speech perception research (EJ 227 656) with comments on categorical perception of speech and nonspeech stimuli, speech perception in context, the role of prosody, and development/impairments of speech perception. Includes a summary of a discussion on speech perception research. (RL)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Adults, Auditory Perception, Children
Peer reviewedLawson, Dewey Tull – American Journal of Physics, 1980
Presents a novel graphic representation for complex musical spectra, based on component intervals rather than component tones. Provides examples of this kind of plot in representing complex intervals and chords, discussing perceptual data; and carrying out various types of consonance analysis. (Author/CS)
Descriptors: Acoustics, College Science, Higher Education, Music
Peer reviewedWeinstein, Carol S.; Weinstein, Neil D. – Journal of Educational Research, 1979
This investigation compared the reading comprehension of 60 fourth-grade students in an open space school during periods of quiet and periods of naturally occurring background noise. Noise had no significant effect on accuracy or reading speed. (JMF)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Open Education
Peer reviewedGottlieb, Herbert H., Ed. – Physics Teacher, 1979
Describes the following laboratory equipment: Biophysics modules to perform bioelectronic investigations of the human body; a large sine wave analog for large audience demonstrations; a resonance tube for measurement of speed of sound; and the snooperscope, a gadget to demonstrate infrared waves. (GA)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Biophysics, Demonstrations (Educational), Electronics
Peer reviewedMorton, John; Chambers, Susan M. – British Journal of Psychology, 1976
Under conditions of serial recall of auditorily presented lists of digits, recall of the last item has been shown to be adversely affected by the presence of a redundant item following the list. It is shown that the size of this effect, the suffix effect, is not influenced by the phonological complexity of the suffix. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Auditory Perception, Charts, Psychological Studies
Peer reviewedWalker, Willard C. – Physics Teacher, 1977
Describes needed equipment and procedures for shattering a glass goblet with the amplified output of an audio oscillator. (MLH)
Descriptors: Acoustics, College Science, Demonstrations (Educational), Higher Education
Peer reviewedLoPresto, Michael C. – Physics Education, 2003
Describes experiments to address the properties of brass musical instruments that can be used to demonstrate sound in any level physics course. The experiments demonstrate in a quantitative fashion the effects of the mouthpiece and bell on the frequencies of sound waves and thus the musical pitches produced. (Author/NB)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Demonstrations (Science), Higher Education, Music
