Zuercher, Kenneth – ProQuest LLC, 2009
From incorporation into the Russian Empire in 1828, through the collapse of the U.S.S.R. in 1991 governmental language policies and other socio/political forces influenced the Turkic population of the Republic of Azerbaijan to speak Russian. Even with changes since independence Russian use--including various kinds of code-switching and…

Gardner, Dee; Davies, Mark – TESOL Quarterly: A Journal for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages and of Standard English as a Second Dialect, 2007
This study attempts to shed new light on one of the most notoriously challenging aspects of English language instruction--the English phrasal verbs. The highest frequency phrasal verb constructions in the 100-million-word British National Corpus are identified and analyzed. The findings indicate that a small subset of 20 lexical verbs combines…

L'Haire, Sebastien – ReCALL, 2007
This paper presents FipsOrtho, a spell checker targeted at learners of French, and a corpus of learners' errors which has been gathered to test the system and to get a sample of specific language learners' errors. Spell checkers are a standard feature of many software products, however they are not designed for specific language learners' errors.…

Crichton, Jonathan – Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, 2007
Studies from a range of disciplinary perspectives have highlighted how the public rhetoric of the Bush administration has shaped the representation of the conflict which has followed 9/11. However, the literature in this area raises but does not itself address the question of how the administration's use of "terror", "terrorism" and "terrorist(s)"…

Fuertes-Olivera, Pedro A. – English for Specific Purposes, 2007
This article investigates lexical gender in specialized communication. The key method of analysis is that of forms of address, professional titles, and "generic man" in a 10 million word corpus of written Business English. After a brief introduction and literature review on both gender in specialized communication and similar corpus-based views of…

Friedman, Daniel P.; And Others – 1969
A set of primitives to allow graph processing on a list processing system is investigated. The object of the investigation is to provide a method of applying intuitive graph solution techniques to graph oriented computer problems. Applications are presented from several disciplines. (Author)

Skorokhodko, E. F. – Edited trans. of Automation of Information Works and Problems of Mathematical Linguistics, 1970
In many cases machine-translation does not produce satisfactory results within the framework of purely formal (morphological and syntaxic) analysis, particularly, in the case of syntaxic and lexical homonomy. An algorithm for syntaxic-semantic analysis is proposed, and its principles of operation are described. The syntaxico-semantic structure is…

Peer reviewedPartridge, D. – International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, 1978
Highlights the customary arbitrariness with which the terms "syntax" and "semantics," and hence "understanding" are applied, and leads to a more systematic application of these concepts. The question of why one notation (grammar, syntax) is more useful than another is raised, and an answer is suggested. (Author/VT)

Analyzed a modern spoken corpus of English (the CANCODE corpus) and found that 2,000 word families made up less than 95% coverage. A second analysis was performed on the CANCODE and the spoken component of the British National Corpus, which found that around 5,000 individual words were required to achieve about a 96 % coverage feature. Peer reviewedOwen, Charles – Applied Linguistics, 1993
The current status of corpus-based lexico-grammar is assessed. Particular reference is to the one substantial descriptive grammar of English to have made use of the new computational techniques, the Collins COBUILD English Grammar. (39 references) (Author/LB)

Peer reviewedBandyopadhayay, Debaprasad – Indian Journal of Applied Linguistics, 2000
The introduction of computational linguistics triggers a new space for communication, an electronic space for a simulated communication network, founded by the post-industrialized society. The language inaugurated by these electronic media is an electric language stripped of its signifier. The new language planning enterprise in cyberspace…

Peer reviewedde Beaugrande, Robert – Applied Linguistics, 2001
The discourse of a recent position paper by H.G. Widdowson is analyzed by using three methods criticized in Widdowson's paper. The paper was converted into a miniature data corpus and analyzed with the concepts of systemic functional linguistics, corpus linguistics, and critical discourse analysis. (Author/VWL)

The lexical semantic structures of change-of-state verbs are explored by linguistic theory, corpus analysis, and psycholinguistic experimentation. Data support the idea that these verbs can be divided into two classes, those for which change of state is internally caused and those for which it is externally caused. (Author/VWL)

The Development of the "Passe Compose" in Lower-Intermediate Learners of French as a Second Language
Macaro, Ernesto; Graham, Suzanne – Language Learning Journal, 2008
In this study we tracked the development of the "passe compose" in second-language learners of French whose first language is English. Although the "passe compose" is a highly used tense among native speakers of French and it appears to present particular difficulty for first-language English speakers, its second-language development has been…
