Clarke, Wayne M. – Journal of Phonetics, 1975
A nasal separator was used to measure the oral and nasal components in the speech of a normal adult Australian population. Results indicated no difference in oral and nasal sound pressure levels for read versus spontaneous speech samples; however, females tended to have a higher nasal component than did males. Torres, Sebastian; Gonzalez-Espada, Wilson J. – Physics Teacher, 2006
Traditionally, the Doppler effect for sound is introduced in high school and college physics courses. Students calculate the perceived frequency for several scenarios relating a stationary or moving observer and a stationary or moving sound source. These calculations assume a constant velocity of the observer and/or source. Although seldom…

Chun, Dorothy M. – 1987
An acoustic study of German focused on voice frequency at sentence-, turn-, and discourse-end in conversations. The data were drawn from short dialogues in which the same word occurs at the ends of utterances, in the middle of a turn, at the end of a turn, and at the end of a discourse. The dialogues were read 10 times by a male and a female…

Allen, George D. – Journal of Phonetics, 1975
The relationship between the rhythms of spoken language and the rhythms of other human behavior is examined in terms of: (1) types of rhythmic structures observed, (2) rate of succession of rhythmic units, (3) a perceptual tendency equalization of physically unequal intervals, and (4) the variability of rhythmic motor action. (Author/RM)

Han, Mieko S. – 1966
This study applies the spectrographic techniques to the analysis of the 11 vowels in the Hanoi dialect of Vietnamese. The analysis involves 5,500 spectrograms made of 869 common words containing these vowels, which are identified and described in terms of their Formant 1 and Formant 2 frequencies. Chapter 1 discusses the dialectal features of the…

Kingsbury, H. F.; Wallace, W. J. – Sound and Vibration, 1968
The acoustic absorption characteristics of informally dressed college students in typical classroom seating are shown to differ substantially from data for formally dressed audiences in upholstered seating. Absorption data, expressed as sabins per person or absorption coefficient per square foot, shows that there is considerable variation between…

Greenlee, Mel – 1974
Children's productions of words with stop-liquid clusters in the adult model are compared across six languages. Although the children learning these languages need not follow the same course of learning, processes operative on adult clusters are shown to be very similar. The children's productions all progressed through the same three major…
