Srinivasan, Padmini; Ruiz, Miguel E.; Lam, Wai – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1996
Proposes a model that assists in understanding indexing on the World Wide Web and presents an experiment assessing the validity of Inverse Document Frequency (IDF) as a term weighting strategy for Web documents. Findings indicate that IDF scores are not stable in the heterogeneous and dynamic context of the Web. (Author/AEF)

Turner, James M. – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1996
A French-language version of stock footage videotapes from previous research (using English-language data) was prepared, using the same images. The most popular terms identified in each of the two studies for each of the shots are compared, to determine the rate of correspondence between potential indexing terms in each language. (Author/AEF)

Dimitroff, Alexandra; And Others – Library & Information Science Research, 1996
Describes a study that investigated the affective responses of 83 subjects at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to 2 versions of a hypertext-based bibliographic retrieval system. The utility of using factor analysis to explore subjects' search experiences is explained, and the effects of different types of linkages are compared. (Author/LRW)

Seki, Kazuhiro; Mostafa, Javed – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2003
Proposes a method for protein name extraction from biological texts. The method exploits hand-crafted rules based on heuristics and a set of protein names (dictionary). The approach avoids use of natural language processing tools so as to improve processing speed. Evaluation experiments were conducted in terms of: accuracy, generalizability, and…
