Zoupidis, Anastasios; Pnevmatikos, Dimitrios; Spyrtou, Anna; Kariotoglou, Petros – Instructional Science: An International Journal of the Learning Sciences, 2016
The aim of the present study was twofold. First, we aimed to replicate the findings of previous studies which had showed a substantial improvement on procedural and epistemological knowledge after direct instruction and their maintenance in time. Second, we aimed to examine the dynamic relationships of the procedural (control of variables…

Nixon, Ryan S.; Godfrey, T. J.; Mayhew, Nicholas T.; Wiegert, Craig C. – Physical Review Physics Education Research, 2016
Lab activities are an important element of an undergraduate physics course. In these lab activities, students construct and interpret graphs in order to connect the procedures of the lab with an understanding of the related physics concepts. This study investigated undergraduate students' construction and interpretation of graphs with best-fit…

Williams, Dilafruz R.; Brule, Heather Anne; Skinner, Ellen; Kelley, Sybil; Lagerwey, Claire – AERA Online Paper Repository, 2016
This study relied on motivational models derived from self-determination theory to explain how garden-based science activities can contribute to minority students' motivation and learning in science class and academic identity in science. Participants were 105 sixth-grade students from primarily low-SES families at two diverse urban schools.…

Cunnah, David – Physics Education, 2014
In this paper I propose a method of calculating the time between line captures in a standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) webcam using the rolling shutter effect when filming a guitar. The exercise links the concepts of wavelength and frequency, while outlining the basic operation of a CMOS camera through vertical line capture.

Logiurato, Fabrizio – Physics Teacher, 2014
The ripple tank is one of the physics education devices most appreciated by teachers and students. It allows one to visualize various phenomena related to wave physics in an effective and enthralling way. Usually this apparatus consists of a tank with a transparent bottom that is filled with a thin layer of water. A source of light illuminates the…

Marrero, Meghan E.; Riccio, Jessica F.; Ben-Jacob, Marion; Canger, Anthony; Maliti, Charles – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2017
Broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers requires that underrepresented students, including women and minorities, persist in their studies and complete undergraduate and graduate degrees. Studies have shown that engaging students in undergraduate research and improving students' science…

Glancy, Aran W.; Moore, Tamara J.; Guzey, Selcen; Smith, Karl A. – Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research, 2017
An understanding of statistics and skills in data analysis are becoming more and more essential, yet research consistently shows that students struggle with these concepts at all levels. This case study documents some of the struggles four groups of fifth-grade students encounter as they collect, organize, and interpret data and then ultimately…

Cersonsky, Rose K.; Foster, Leanna L.; Ahn, Taeyong; Hall, Ryan J.; van der Laan, Harry L.; Scott, Timothy F. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2017
Despite the prevalence of polymers in modern everyday life, there is little introduction to the topic in science education throughout primary or secondary schooling in the United States. Of the few states that do include polymer education, this is only found at the high school level, primarily in biology or chemistry. Over the past year, we have…

Greene, Kim; Heyck-Williams, Jeff; Timpson Gray, Elicia – Educational Leadership, 2017
Problem solving spans all grade levels and content areas, as evidenced by this compilation of projects from schools across the United States. In one project, high school girls built a solar-powered tent to serve their city's homeless population. In another project, 4th graders explored historic Jamestown to learn about the voices lost to history.…

Kotsari, Constantina; Smyrnaiou, Zacharoula – European Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, 2017
The central roles that modelling plays in the processes of scientific enquiry and that models play as the outcomes of that enquiry are well established (Gilbert & Boulter, 1998). Besides, there are considerable similarities between the processes and outcomes of science and technology (Cinar, 2016). In this study, we discuss how the use of…
