Discrimination, Harassment, and Bias in Higher Education: Disaggregating the Experiences of LGBTQ+ Students
John Yang1; Ellen Bara Stolzenberg2
New Directions for Higher Education, n210 p37-46 2025
Queer and transgender students in higher education experience elevated rates of discrimination, bias, and harassment, which affect their well-being and academic outcomes. These experiences differ across various identities within these communities, necessitating a nuanced approach to understanding their distinct challenges. This article examines disaggregated data to highlight patterns of discrimination, bias, and harassment among different queer subgroups and for transgender students, specifically. Using the multi-contextual model for diverse learning environments (MMDLE) and findings from the diverse learning environments (DLE) survey, this study provides group-specific insights to help institutions create more supportive and inclusive campus environments.
