Concludes that many interracial contact situations that are perceived as being of equal status by whites are not perceived in the same manner by blacks, suggesting a modification of the traditional equal status contact hypothesis as well as having direct implications for policy making in school desegregation. The authors present some recommendations that would enhance a residence hall worker's capacity to make effective referrals. They suggest that roles be clearly defined, that the resident worker know the receiving professionals, that training occur for the resident workers, and that referrals be concrete and specific. Osipow's 1962 study was extended so that a sample of 173 subjects consisting of school students, university students and teachers provided ratings on the semantic differential for each of nine jobs.
