Stanisstreet, Martin – Journal of Biological Education, 1983
Describes a method for in vitro culturing of cells from amphibian early embryos. Such cells can be used to demonstrate such properties of eukaryote cells as cell motility, adhesion, differentiation, and cell sorting into tissues. The technique may be extended to investigate other factors. (Author/JN)

Bauman, Robert; Swartz, Clifford E. – Physics Teacher, 1984
Examines the treatment of errors and significant figures in physics manuals as part of an evaluation of these instructional materials. Comments on specific materials reviewed are provided. (JN)
Descriptors: Evaluation, High Schools, Laboratory Manuals, Physics
Walker, Jearl – Scientific American, 1984
The tendency of a poured liquid to cling to the outside of a container is known as the "teapot effect." The nature of the teapot effect and experiments investigating this phenomenon are described. (JN)

Langley, Richard H.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Describes a senior-level experiment dealing with the synthesis and characterization of a perovskite. Since most perovskites are cubic, their characterization by x-ray diffraction is simplified. In addition, magnetic ordering may be observed and the effects of a Jahn-Teller distortion seen. (JN)

Thompson, Wayne J.; Hanson, Bryan A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Describes a new, modified "flash chromatography" apparatus which overcomes difficulties found in conventional apparatus. For example, an expensive teflon pressure valve is not necessary in the modified version. The apparatus is suitable as an instructional tool in undergraduate courses. (JN)

Scadding, Steven R. – Journal of Biological Education, 1984
A simple method of studying thyroxine-induced resorption of tadpole tails in vitro is described. This procedure demonstrates that resorption is dependent on thyroxine and requires protein synthesis. It introduces students to the use of tissue culture methods. (Author)

Joseph, Babu; Elliott, David – Chemical Engineering Education, 1984
A laboratory course design to teach the principles of process data acquisition and control using digital computers was developed at Washington University. The structure of the laboratory and course are described. The course outline and list of experiments are included. (JN)

Knoche, Wilhelm; Rees, Norman H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Background information, procedures, and typical results are provided for an experiment on the decomposition of murexide in acid solution. The experiment, suitable for advanced courses, can be easily performed in a 6-hour laboratory period. (JN)

Anderson, C. P.; Saner, W. A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
An experiment for determining polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) isomers is described. The very low vapor pressures of PCB's allow them to be handled safely in the laboratory. In addition, this low volatility permits their analysis by thin-layer chromatography and recovery from the developed plate with effectively no evaporative losses. (JN)

Serianz, Art; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1976
Describes the preparation of two radical systems that are stable at ambient temperatures and give reproducibly well-resolved spectra without careful control of temperature or vacuum line degassing of oxygen. (MLH)

Demas, J. N. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1976
Describes the theory, apparatus, and procedure for an experiment that measures the bimolecular quenching constant for the deactivation of an excited ruthenium ion complex using dissolved oxygen. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Instructional Materials

Nigh, W. G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1976
Describes an experiment in which the reaction rate and equilibrium constant are obtained for the fumarase-catalyzed interconversion of fumaric acid and L-malic acid. (MLH)

Johnson, Ronald W.; Ryan, Brenda J. – Journal of Research in Personality, 1976
Reports on a series of four experiments designed to study the importance of the variables of task structure and method of expectancy inducement in effecting systematic observer bias. (Author/RK)

Salatas, H.; Bourne, L. E., Jr. – American Journal of Psychology, 1976
In a series of three experiments on the role of memory in solving attribute-identification problems, the subjects did or did not have to remember their response and/or the stimulus for processing during any given intertrial interval. (Editor)

McKelvie, Stuart J. – American Journal of Psychology, 1976
Investigates the relative importance that the eyes and mouth play in the representation in memory of a human face. Systematically applies two kinds of transformation--masking the eyes or the mouths on photographs of faces--and observes the effects on recognition. (Author/RK)
