Contributions to Music Education, v50 p67-85 2025
The purpose of this study was to examine session topics (n = 1,636) and clinicians (n = 2,263) at The Midwest Clinic from 2000-2019 using abstracts and biographies acquired from conference programs. Sessions were coded into one of 23 content codes and one of four audience codes using a coding scheme developed by the researchers. Clinicians were coded by expressed gender, position, and geographic location. The number of sessions increased from 48 in 2000 to 141 in 2019. Trend analysis indicated positive trends for classroom leadership, cultural/social competency, profession, and research, while negative trends were found for instrument techniques, repertoire/instructional material, and percussion. The audience focus of sessions was largely aimed toward the general audience and band musicians. Clinicians were primarily men, held positions in higher education, and were based in the United States. Positive trends were found for the percentage of women and K-12 clinicians
