The problem of predicting universe scores for samples of examinees based on their responses to samples of items is treated. The measurement model categorizes items according to the cells of a table of test specifications, and the linear function derived for minimizing error variance in prediction uses responses to these categories. Presents data indicating substantial differences in scoring the Miner Sentence Completion Scales used in the Bartol et al. study between the original scorers and both Miner and Ebrahimi. Analyses indicate that the Bartol et al. results are a consequence of scoring errors often found among less experienced scorers. (Author/BH)

To determine if the observed correlation between two variables can be "explained" by a third variable, a significance test on the partial correlation coefficient is often used. The effects of under and overrotation on common factor loading stability under three levels of common variance and three levels or error are examined. Four representative factor matrices were selected. Results suggested that matrices which account for large amounts of common variance tend to have stable factor loadings. (Author/RL)
