Peer reviewedSamuel, Arthur – Cognitive Psychology, 1986
This article reviews the history, the use and the reasons for abandonment of the selective adaptation paradigm. The four experiments mentioned in the article show that selective adaptation produces strong reaction time effects, and that items in the adapted category are identified more slowly than unadapted items. (JAZ)

Peer reviewedIrwin, R. J.; And Others – Child Development, 1985
Studies development of auditory temporal acuity in 56 children aged 6 to 12 years and in 8 adults. Improvement in temporal acuity with age was attributed to development of sensory processes and not to age-related changes in nonsensory factors. (Author/BE)

Battin, R. Ray; Waryas, Paul A. – Journal of Childhood Communication Disorders, 1985
Profiles of three persons (9-11 years old) with extremely reduced masking level difference results (scores which measure binaural release from masking) are reported. It is suggested that tests of the MLD appear to be a useful adjunct of an evaluation battery for patients with presumed auditory perceptual problems. (CL)

Peer reviewedTobey, Emily A.; Cullen, John K., Jr. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1984
Temporal auditory-integration for short-duration, frequency-varying signals was examined in 14 children (9-17 years old) with deficits in auditory memory and reading. No significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups' thresholds as a function of signal class (i.e., fixed-frequency or tone glide) or duration.…

Leventhal, Gloria – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
The aim of the present experiment was to determine the locus of the set effect of sentence context on the intelligibility of a member word. (Author)

Peer reviewedHeilbrun, Alfred B., Jr. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1973
Investigated adolescent males' recognition of evaluative words spoken near threshold by male and female voices. Closed-style subjects (theoretically characterized by social withdrawal and perceptual blocking) recognized fewer female-spoken (relative to male-spoken) words; this finding is consistent with adaptive-style theory. (DP)

Peer reviewedGengel, Roy W.; Watson, Charles S. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1971
Discussed are three problems for clinicians to consider when using temporal integration data for diagnostic purposes with the aurally handicapped. Problems stem from evidence that integration time depends on frequency, that an individual can vary considerably on repeated measurements, and that integration time can differ with different…
