Briggs, Nancy E.; MacCallum, Robert C. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2003
Examined the relative performance of two commonly used methods of parameter estimation in factor analysis, maximum likelihood (ML) and ordinary least squares (OLS) through simulation. In situations with a moderate amount of error, ML often failed to recover the weak factor while OLS succeeded. Also presented an example using empirical data. (SLD)
Descriptors: Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Factor Structure

Bandalos, Deborah L. – Structural Equation Modeling, 1997
Monte Carlo methods were used to study the accuracy and utility of estimators of overall error and error due to approximation in structural equation modeling. Effects of sample size, indicator reliabilities, and degree of misspecification were examined. The rescaled noncentrality parameter also was examined. Choosing among competing models is…
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Monte Carlo Methods

Kaplan, David – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1990
A strategy for evaluating/modifying covariance structure models (CSMs) is presented. The approach uses recent developments in estimation under nonstandard conditions and unified asymptotic theory related to hypothesis testing, and it determines the extent of sample size sensitivity and specification error effects by relying on existing statistical…

Wilson, Mark – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1989
An empirical sampling approach was used to assess the accuracy of a Taylor approximation for the estimation of sampling errors. The sampling errors were in the statistics involved in estimating a path model based on medium-sized samples gathered using five sample designs commonly used in educational research. (TJH)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Mathematical Models

Green, Donald Ross; And Others – Applied Measurement in Education, 1989
Potential benefits of using item response theory in test construction are evaluated using the experience and evidence accumulated during nine years of using a three-parameter model in the development of major achievement batteries. Topics addressed include error of measurement, test equating, item bias, and item difficulty. (TJH)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Computer Assisted Testing, Difficulty Level, Equated Scores

Smith, Richard M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1988
This study investigated the distributional properties of the standardized residual that is commonly used in the Rasch model calibration program to develop various indices of item and person fit. The power of the standardized residual to detect measurement disturbances is also addressed. (TJH)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Error of Measurement, Goodness of Fit, Guessing (Tests)

Slate, John R.; Chick, David – Psychology in the Schools, 1989
Clinical psychology graduate students (N=14) administered Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. Found numerous scoring and mechanical errors that influenced full-scale intelligence quotient scores on two-thirds of protocols. Particularly prone to error were Verbal subtests of Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Similarities. Noted specific…

Segall, Daniel O. – Psychometrika, 1994
An asymptotic expression for the reliability of a linearly equated test is developed using normal theory. Reliability is expressed as the product of test reliability before equating and an adjustment term that is a function of the sample sizes used to estimate the linear equating transformation. The approach is illustrated. (SLD)
Descriptors: Equated Scores, Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Sample Size

Jamieson, John – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1995
Computer simulations indicate that the correlation between baseline and change, by itself, does not invalidate the use of gain scores to measure change, but when the negative correlation is accompanied by decrease in variance from pretest to posttest, covariance is a superior measure of change. (SLD)
Descriptors: Analysis of Covariance, Change, Computer Simulation, Correlation

Algina, James – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1994
Alternative tests are presented for the between-by-within interaction null hypothesis and for two within-subjects main effects null hypothesis in a split plot design. Estimated Type I error rates for the interaction tests and for several tests of the second null hypothesis are reported. (SLD)
Descriptors: Equations (Mathematics), Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Hypothesis Testing

Hsu, Louis M. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1995
Focuses on regression effects that arise from measurement error, and examines methods used to evaluate pre- to post-therapy score changes that attempt to take these regression effects into account. Discusses statistical and practical problems, identifies and analyzes specific examples, and distinguishes objectives of these methods from other…
Descriptors: Error of Measurement, Measurement, Prediction, Psychological Evaluation

Storms, Gert – Psychometrika, 1995
A Monte Carlo study was conducted to investigate the robustness of the assumed error distribution in maximum likelihood estimation models for multidimensional scaling. Results show that violations of the assumed error distribution have virtually no effect on the estimated distance parameters. (SLD)
Descriptors: Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Maximum Likelihood Statistics, Monte Carlo Methods

Schouten, Peter G. W.; And Others – Occupational Therapy Journal of Research, 1993
Schouten and Kirkpatrick's review of evaluations of the Miller Assessment for Preschoolers' predictive validity reveals unacceptably high error rates in target population identification. Miller's response suggests flaws in their argument, Humphry and King-Thomas suggest alternative interpretations, and Schouten and Kirkpatrick respond to their…
Descriptors: At Risk Persons, Child Development, Error of Measurement, Predictive Validity

Stone, Clement A. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1992
TESTAT is a supplementary module for the popular SYSTAT statistical package for the personal computer. The program performs test analyses based on classical test theory and item response theory. Limitations and advantages are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Testing, Computer Software Evaluation, Error of Measurement, Item Response Theory

Olson, Julie B.; Hulin, Charles – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1992
Ninety-five subjects observing videotaped secretaries performing well or poorly were told either to evaluate or monitor job performance. Ratings were influenced by the rater's objective. Regardless of objective, results showed a high level of covariance among the independent traits of the secretaries. (SK)
