Howard, James H., Jr.; Howard, Darlene V.; Dennis, Nancy A.; Kelly, Andrew J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2008
Knowledge of sequential relationships enables future events to be anticipated and processed efficiently. Research with the serial reaction time task (SRTT) has shown that sequence learning often occurs implicitly without effort or awareness. Here, the authors report 4 experiments that use a triplet-learning task (TLT) to investigate sequence…

Kettler, Ryan J.; Elliott, Stephen N.; Albers, Craig A. – Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 2008
The Brief Academic Competence Evaluation Screening System (BACESS) is a multiphase universal screening measure designed to assist educators in the identification of students who are likely to experience learning difficulties in elementary school. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the measure for this purpose. The BACESS was used…

Glas, Cees A. W.; Pimentel, Jonald L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2008
In tests with time limits, items at the end are often not reached. Usually, the pattern of missing responses depends on the ability level of the respondents; therefore, missing data are not ignorable in statistical inference. This study models data using a combination of two item response theory (IRT) models: one for the observed response data and…

Carmalt, Julie H.; Cawley, John; Joyner, Kara; Sobal, Jeffery – Journal of Marriage and Family, 2008
Matching and attribute trade are two perspectives used to explain mate selection. We investigated patterns of matching and trade, focusing on obesity, using Add Health Romantic Pair data (N = 1,405 couples). Obese individuals, relative to healthy weight individuals, were less likely to have physically attractive partners, with this disadvantage…

Ryden, Jesper – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2008
Extreme-value statistics is often used to estimate so-called return values (actually related to quantiles) for environmental quantities like wind speed or wave height. A basic method for estimation is the method of block maxima which consists in partitioning observations in blocks, where maxima from each block could be considered independent.…

Pettingell, Sandra L.; Bearinger, Linda H.; Skay, Carol L.; Resnick, Michael D.; Potthoff, Sandra K.; Eichhorn, John – American Journal of Health Behavior, 2008
Objective: To examine the likelihood of a past suicide attempt for urban American Indian boys and girls, given salient risk and protective factors. Methods: Survey data from 569 urban American Indian, ages 9-15, in-school youths. Logistic regression determined probabilities of past suicide attempts. Results: For girls, suicidal histories were…

Wolff, Hans – 1970
This paper deals with a stochastic process for the approximation of the root of a regression equation. This process was first suggested by Robbins and Monro. The main result here is a necessary and sufficient condition on the iteration coefficients for convergence of the process (convergence with probability one and convergence in the quadratic…

Formann, Anton K. – Psychometrika, 1978
As the literature indicates, no method is presently available which takes explicitly into account that the parameters of Lazarsfeld's latent class analysis are defined as probabilities and are therefore restricted to the interval (0,1). An appropriate transform on the parameters is presented in order to satisfy this constraint. (Author/JKS)

Ramsey, Philip H.; Ramsey, Patricia P. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1988
The accuracy of normal approximations to the binomial test was evaluated with and without a continuity correction, regarding control of Type I errors and power. Both tests exhibited substantial power loss in comparison to the exact binomial test, although they are easier to apply and are sometimes desirable. (SLD)

Freeman, Linton – Psychometrika, 1976
This note extends and elaborates Hubert's attempt to provide an interpretation of Freeman's measure of association, theta. The theta measure is used in a contingency table when observations are ordered on one variable and unordered on the other. No attempt is made to explore the distribution of theta. (Author/RC)

Cooper, Martin – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
An exact probability test for use with certain Likert-type scales is presented. The procedure assumes equally-spaced points, independence of subjects' responses, and that each point has an equal likelihood of response for each subject. Tables for critical values are presented. (Author/JKS)
